I played it twice, then I played along to it on my guitar...I play along to all of Prince's stuff...I get a better feel for the album that way and plus I grow as a muso. Anyway, I'm feeling a lot of Herbie on this, but this recording is intrinsically Prince, but the NEW Prince, not the Purple Rain man. This is a musician who has really come into his own for at least the 10th time in his life and by that I mean the wonderful process that is personal and musical reinvention. This recording is deep and spiritual...it is beyond Madhouse and it is more SEARCHING than Xpectation (also a good record, IMO). This album is great, not boring at all...you just have to be able to find that part of you that want to reflect on the MUSIC and feel its waywardness, as opposed to just getting another lyrical fix about love or some shit. That's all well and good, but this is the real deal, not pop fodder. If Zappa and Miles were alive, I think they'd be supportive of this latest musical journey from Prince. Like someone else pointed out, it probably won't change the world, but NEWS is a fine piece of work. I give it **** 1/2 (if you want a reference for my grading, I give TRC **** 1/2, too and Xpectation *** 1/2).

Considering his religious bent of recent times, I am thinking so, along with the "New directions in music" referred to on the sleeve (and what a sleeve it is, by the way!)
