NEWS is not good news!

I love Prince and will continue to buy everything he does but I gotta say this. NEWS IS DULL AND FAIRLY BORING

Okay so this is where Prince is at right now (ie on an instrumental vibe, first with Xenophobia and now News).

This is to do with my PERSONAL TASTE but I don't really dig this vibe.

If this had been released as Madhouse or as a club only album then I would find it easier to accept (ie it isn't a full on Prince album).

I like hearing him sing, it's got nothing to do with really long meandering jams - I love THE WAR it rocks.

I'm just really dissappointed and expect this will get the least plays of anything I have by Prince.

Again this is my personal taste but I want songs. I like hearing what the man has to say.

sigh

I'll be the judge of that when I receive my copy of the CD...I'm curious how the mainstream audience will respond to it, actually...definitely a new direction for Prince...and give it to Prince to try something new like this...who knows, people may respond to it better than they did with The Rainbow Children album...

I really loved The Rainbow Children album (although to be honest I could live without the voiceover so I could concentrate on the songs).

I saw TRC as a brave new direction (a big enough "New Direction in Music for Prince") and one that I was happy to ride on.

I was really psyched when I knew another album was coming because I thought he would expand and continue on the themes/styles he explored with TRC.

Simply dissappointed - but still here because being a Prince fan has always been an interesting ride!

Give it more time - this album is sublime.

Musically, he has expanded on themes in TRC and has extended his own musical palette in the process - he is painting a very different sonic landscape with this album, I suggest you let it wash over you a few more times.

I certainly will, it could be a grower (but I'll still miss the songs)

Well that right there is the problem. Too many Prince fans keep buying this shit even if they don't like it. Prince then sees that he's getting some sales, and he keeps producing shitty music. The best way to protest is to stop buying until he produces an album that we like. Otherwise the bullshit will never end.

The mainstream audience will never know of its existance, so they won't have an opinion. According to popular belief, Prince stopped recording years ago.

Well said jaypotton.
I think it's tedious too, if you've read my post you'll find it left me asking one question:
Why was this released at all, what was the point?

Anxiety

It comes across to me like a garden variety jam band album, only maybe a bit more interesting to me in that instead of it being the Grateful Dead or Phish, it just so happens to be one of my favorite artists. It doesn't sound like these songs are compositions but rather freeform jam sessions that got polished up for album release. And that's fine and all, but in general, I think I like it when the content of Prince's music has more concept behind it, rather than the packaging being designed into a concept for music that just goes wherever it wants (not that there's anything wrong with that).

If you didn't know the title of the album or see the packaging, would you know the theme is North/East/South/West? I don't think I would...

I like this album I like this style of music though, and for this style it is excellent, top notch, and remember it does say on the package NEW DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC , a new style but a style thats quite familiar cause alot of his music goes on like this, those to me are some of the most memorable and rarer moments that I've longed for him to elaborate on for years, Lady cab driver, Crystal Ball, Soul Psycodelicide, I Wonder U, Insatiable...give me more, this was just the opening sample to the public...NO? WHAT A SAMPLE! Im gonna wear this out, Listen to it in some headphones if your not gettin the picture let it relax your brain

Not true, GeneMohawk. Some people are able to appreciate this album's beauty and subtelty, others, like yourself, are clearly not.

I'll bet that if someone stuck on "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis without telling you what it was, you would sit there and come to the same conclusion - boring, meandering, table-scraps! Yet, it is considered one of (if not THE) finest jazz albums ever. But, not everyone gets it, not everyone who hears it thinks it is a masterpiece - does that mean it isn't?

Just because you, and others, don't like this album does not mean it is shit, it just means you don't like it - deal with it!

OK LISTEN...

YOU appreciate the "beauty" and "subtlety" of this professional hackwork. YOU let the "songs" wash over you, and YOU meditate to it. i already made my judgement on this cd, and if you don't like it, tough sh*t. i've "DEALT" with it, now YOU deal with it. TO ME, it is sh*t, and that's my opinion--and it DOESN'T have to be yours. maybe we shouldn't have a listening party or luncheon together huh mindflux? smile

miles davis lp "kind of blue" IS a masterpiece. it is OBVIOUS that this is expert musicianship and well written songs. if "kind of blue" is sirloin steak... N*E*W*S is f*cking hamburger helper. end of story.

Oh and by the way, "Kind of Blue" was not written per se, rather Miles Davis wrote down the chords and modes and everybody jammed on that - just a bit of info for you as you seemed unaware and also highlights just how great it is.

Incidentally, what is so "obvious" about Kind of Blue that makes it a masterpiece for you?

i never said i disagreed with you my friend. i was merely stating my opinion, and didn't like the way you came at me. i don't like N*E*W*S, and you do. so what.

as for "kind of blue"... listen... this is no beginner you're dealing with here. i studied jazz for years, i know the stories behind this one, and i'm sure you do too (judging by your comments on this one--also considering the fact that you are a musician too) and "kind of blue" is one of my favorite lps of all time. so i don't wish to get into this. i was OFFENDED that you may think that i may think that "kind of blue" is in the same glass of water as N*E*W*S. it's not, and you know this too.

No probs, Gene, and sorry if I offended in the first place - not the intention!

I am just surprised as to how dismissive you are of this recording, but horses for courses eh?

You obviously know you're stuff, as do I - it just seemed to me that your comments were, perhaps, ill-considered but, blatantly, that isn't the case.

No, I wouldn't put NEWS in the same league as Kind of Blue, but I still think it is a great record, albeit with some flaws - but, hey, give me an album by Prince that isn't flawed! smile
