Good thing it wasn't about songs that should have been #2...

PURPLE RAIN - Not really a #1 type of song. People Identify it with him, but it is not a #1 song at all.

LITTLE RED CORVETTE - I agree. It had all of the elements of a #! song

ANNA STESIA - The lyrics are too incoherent for the masses. Definitely too spiritual for #1.

SOMTIMESITSNOWSINAPRIL - The arrangement was too simple and definitely NOT radio friendly.

SCANDELOUS - should have been a #1 r&b hit, but a pop audience definitely couldn't feel this type of jam.

THIEVES IN THE TEMPLE - Song is great, but was too advanced for 1990. I think if it was released in the mid-90s, it might have been a possible #1 hit.

JOY AND REPETITION - LOVE THIS SONG, but not very radio friendly

EROTIC CITY - Well, this really was a #1 hit. It was the flip side of Let's Go Crazy. Come on, do you really think Let's Go Crazy was a hit with the r&b music fans?

17 DAYS - I agree. It did get a lot of airplay though.

SHHH - not very radio friendly

DO ME BABY - too sexy for the masses. Should have been a bigger r&b hit, though.

1999 - I agree

DIAMONDS AND PEARLS - I thought this did hit #1 (I could be wrong).

GETT OFF - Prince claims this as a #1, but I don't think it was. Pop radio wasn't feeling this one too much.

GLAM SLAM - Another hit the masses didn't get.

GOLD - The song is not very radio friendly

SHES ALWAYS IN MY HAIR - I agree with u.

Some more I think should have been #1 include
Adore
Now
P Control (at least a club hit. I know a lot of clubs played)
Let's Work
Lady Cab Driver
Play In The Sunshine (should have been a huge pop hit)
Jam Of The Year (Should have been the 1st single from Emancipation and people would have eaten it up. It was definitely radio friendly and #1 material)
High
Supercute

'gold' was an attempt to make another 'purple rain' imo.

it's a cool and very catchy song--absolutely radio friendly.

was a small hit in my country too.

Dolphin

Silicon

1) TMBGITW was #1 in a billion countries,incl. australia.

2) i thought Dolphin WAS a single?

3) Silicon is,musically,a ripoff of Mj's "2BAD" from the HIStory album.
if not a ripoff... trying 2 sound way 2 much like it.

I agree with nearly all those. I really love "17 Days" and can't believe it was never released as its own single. And I along with most people thought "Purple Rain" was a number one (and that it had a video..it didn't right). I don't think I could picture "Anna Stesia" or "Joy and Repetition" as big hits though.

Nobody's mentioned "Somebody's Somebody". Always loved this one and wondered why it didn't at least become a minor hit. Was it an offical single or did it just have a video?

Muffy

I think Raspberry Beret should have been if it wasn't and what about ADORE? Definitely Agree with 1999,Purple Rain, Diamonds and Pearls,Little Red Corvette. Other songs weren't really played enough to become number 1. Although in my opinion they are Wonderful and Overlooked. What about LIVE FOR LOVE which Should have been a single or SACRIFICE OF VICTOR or even well DOLPHIN and HOUSEQUAKE? Or maybe WE MARCH? Cause Warners picked and Prince wanted maybe something different or whatever and they gotta pick Radio Friendly Choices. You would hear HOUSEQUAKE and ADORE all over WBLS and KISS and NEITHER was a SINGLE.

But not wher it counts - the USA, even tho' I live in Oz (and love it), I don't pay attention 2 the charts here, they're boring. Mind u, the USA charts @ the moment, with 50 Cent and co r even worse. Anyway, PRINCE's stuff is years ahead of anything in either U.S. or Oz.

Only a promo video.

I'd never thought of it that way, hmmm...I prefer SILICON, even tho', 2bad is cool, SillyCON (as I spell it)is lyrically much more interesting...

Peace,

R.
