It had a good video. It got "groundbreaking" airplay on MTV, but the song itself? I just don't think it's all that great. What are you smoking? "Billie Jean" is a classic pop song. It's amazing.Back in '83,you didn't hear anything else like it on the radio. That pulsing beat, that unforgettable bassline,Michael's powerful vocals, the dramatic, paranoid lyrics, and the haunting arrangemnent makes this a strong contender for best pop song of the 80s,imo.Yes,the excellent video hepled to make it a huge smash, but the song itself is stunning on it's own. i know this d-eye back then...you couldn't escape the song or video. Mj was everywhere! the gloved one made the best videos back then (BAD was a tad strange...but the dance sequences were excellent) its funny man...in the dance clubs i hung out in-when the dj would start up BJ ...and the bass intro started people would go absolutely CRAZeee! it was like a religious experience (ha ha) everybody WEnt off on MJ's tune! even now...if i play the song i wanna get up and "dance My ass off"! whether it is the greatest song or a not...isn't really the issue. all i know is the effect it had on dancers back in the day. (and me...even now!) charles...my second fave mj tunes to dance to are all the uptempo ones on Off The Wall. | |
