Yeah, Zappa is absolutely amazing, is he not?

So much breadth and depth and funny as fuck to. In terms of musical complexity (and considering the time when he recorded his music) and studio ability he has/had the edge on Prince. But Prince is more accessible and, ultimately, more enjoyable I find.

But its a close call - Joe's Garage is a masterpiece and it pre-dates Prince's rallying against the industry by some 2 or 3 decades!

Talk about a mixed catalog! Early on, Zappa let the rock auteur label go to his head and put out some real drivel (doo-wop and musical fratboy jokes, etc). P's worst stuff doesn't come close to significant chunks of Zappa's crappa.

(And I consider myself a fan, seen Zappa in concert and even turned my teenaged son onto the good Zappa albums.)

Yes, exactly.

And I'd also like to add, that many of you are mixing his personality, and his assinine behaviour with his music.

When it comes to art, I find it hard to rank artists because one artist gives you things another doesn't, and so on.

But, Prince? Hmmm, hard to top.
I would put Sananda Maitreya in the general area (out of artists still alive and performing today). And MJ. Those 3 steal most of my listening hours, without a doubt. So I guess based on personal airplay, they win. They are all inspiring.

It's all part and parcel of liking someone, i sometimes listen to Prince and can't help thinking what an asshole he can be, and that can detract from my enjoyment of his music. The person he has become contradicts and clashes with alot of his back catalogue too.I know he's not the same person anymore.Sorry, that's the way it is with me.

I acknowledge KRS-ONE and Sade as musical geniuses equal to Prince.

It irritates me when people compare Prince to Michael Jackson and Madonna. I find Madonna repulsive.

There was a time I woulda said no, Prince is It with a capital I, but I can't front anymore...Bowie's my MainMan, because he keeps coming through for his fans, he gives funny and intelligent interviews (always learn SOMEthing from the man), and being a Bowie fan never means having to deal with straight-up bullshit. Oh, and the music ain't bad either. lol

Prince will always be up there - he was my introduction to "real" music, his music got me through some crappy and boring high school years, and it's introduced me to quite a few very cool people. It may very well be that I could never like another album he does, but I'll still always buy his new releases as close to the first day as possible.

Am I banned?

I'm in a similar boat, only I can't quite decide who I like better. Bowie has been more consistent over the last decade and has been peaking since '93. I honestly love every album he's put out in that period. And I'm still at the height of my love for him. With Prince, I've had a lot of down time, so the love comes and goes. Clearly, Prince is the better musician. But Bowie is hands down cooler. And his music is a lot closer to how I think about things and how I create. He's definitely the artist I admire most.

Michael Jackson and Prince are the only artists i'd ever visit a message board from, so i guess it's a tie.
But MJ was my introduction to music. He isn't very prolific or original so i often wondered why, but there's something about his music and persona that keeps me interested even after all those years.

Hmmm this question is difficult for me. i hold a
lot of artists in as high esteem as prince.

counting my record & video collection the only artists
i have more on besides prince is the Beatles.
( they had a head start on prince in my musical world
by a few decades!)

i probably listen more to prince than them now.
but that's only cuz he's the superior performer (live)
their body of work is on a higher level than prince.

no it ain't blasphemy...i'm just speakin' da truth.

now although i have more stuff from beatles & prince...
the guy that i put over both of these great artists is
the late CURTIs Mayfield.

curtis is my main man. he's the cat i hear in my head
when i sing and play guitar. to me he's IT.

he's more important to me than prince. if there were more
video footage out on him i'd have more of him than the
"kid".

right behind him is stevie.smokey, & james.

those brothas some hard guys to not hold in high esteem!

I like Prince best, but probably out of habit. He made such a big impression on me both musically and personally during my teenage years!

I haven't been truly excited about any of his albums since Lovesexy, although each album has some topnotch songs on it. I personally think TRC was a return to form musically, but the instumentral releases that followed are not on the same level I think.

If I have to be truly objective, I think Steely Dan is my favorite band...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP COMPARING MJ TO PRINCE. IT'S LIKE COMPARING APPLES TO ORANGES!!!

AS FOR BETTER THAN? IT'S REALLY NOT FAIR TO EVEN COMPARE BECAUSE P IS SO DIFFERENT. I CAN'T REALLY COMPARE HIM TO ANY OTHER MUSIC I LIKE, AND I LOVE ALL TYPES OF MUSIC...FROM CLASSICAL TO COUNTRY TO HIP-HOP AND OF COURSE JAZZ.

IF ASKED TO COMPARE TALENT, I WOULD PLACE STEVIE AND EARTH, WIND AND FIRE RIGHT UP THERE, ALONG WITH GEORGE CLINTON (PARLIAMENT, FUNKADELIC) AND STING...

MICHAEL JACKSON WILL NEVER MAKE MY LIST! HE CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO PRINCE OR THESE AFOREMENTIONED *TRULY BRILLIANT* MUSICIANS!

If it's that bad save yourself the aggravation and stop listening to him. Easy. Otherwise it's not as bad as you let on.

Like some people said it's difficult and never really fair to compare artists, but for me Sananda Maitreya has gained that "No 1" spot from Prince.

I like his old stuff more than anything, but there are a few artist's I prefer compared to his new stuff. Don't get me wrong, i still enjoy what he brings out as I pretty much love any music, but it ain't a patch on what it used to be.
