I like MJ about the same.Say what you like about MJ, he's never gone out of his way to piss his fans off, always has time for his fans, will sign an autograph and he supports file sharing (as reported last week).

Top man.

I used to...MJ hasn't done anything for awhile except bitch/complain about Sony, Tommy Mottolla, etc. I just wish he'd shut-up and write some music.

Earth to Summerdawn, Prince is STILL bitching/complaining about WB ten years after the event, infact i don't think he'll ever stop whining about something which was HIS fault. The Sony thing was two years ago, MJ hasn't mentioned it since.

Miles Davis is probably equal. I've actually got more Miles CDs than Prince CDs (only cause there's more out there to get!). That's how I got into Prince, reading in Miles's autobiography how he liked Prince so much, and I was like "Huh?"!

I don't mind waiting for MJ to get off his ass and do something, at least it's still seen as an 'event' when he does do something.

Prince could do with taking a few years break too IMO, to collect himself.

who knows when mj will do something again.
he has made many promises. we have seen none of these fruits yet.

im a really new prince fan, so im still discovering him. he hasnt gone stale for me yet, like mj did.
though, when mj does something new i will be extreemly excited and do the fanly thing of screaming, crying, constantly listening to the album, talking about it 24/7 and so on:D

Squarepusher is currently doing it for me the same as when I discovered Prince!!! I'm not saying I like him more, but he is having a similar impact - now there is somebody who really is taking music in new directions!!

In fact, much as I like NEWS, I had to laugh when I read on the, rather cool, sleeve "New directions in music" - sorry, but there is not one single musical innovation on that disc! Listen to Squarepusher's "Do You Know Squarepusher" and there are a million new ideas in each track - endlessly fascinating!

There was a time I woulda said no, Prince is It with a capital I, but I can't front anymore...Bowie's my MainMan, because he keeps coming through for his fans, he gives funny and intelligent interviews (always learn SOMEthing from the man), and being a Bowie fan never means having to deal with straight-up bullshit. Oh, and the music ain't bad either. lol

Prince will always be up there - he was my introduction to "real" music, his music got me through some crappy and boring high school years, and it's introduced me to quite a few very cool people. It may very well be that I could never like another album he does, but I'll still always buy his new releases as close to the first day as possible.

Am I banned?

Not more, but different.

Yes, exactly.

And I'd also like to add, that many of you are mixing his personality, and his assinine behaviour with his music. I think he lacks many social gifts, but he is my favorite for the music.

But, my "different" favorites include:

Frank Zappa - Prog/Jazz/Comi-Rock
David Bowie - Classic/Prog/Glam-Rock
Miles Davis - Acid/Fusion/Jungle-Jazz
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Folk/Jazz-Jazz/Folk (smile)

And, I must also add that I have only been listening to Frank Zappa for about the last 6 months. No artist I have ever listened to has ever climbed the ranks of my favoritism this quickly. I'm clamoring for his music. Trouble is, it's usually hard to find and it's expensive.

Yeah, Zappa is absolutely amazing, is he not?

So much breadth and depth and funny as fuck to. In terms of musical complexity (and considering the time when he recorded his music) and studio ability he has/had the edge on Prince. But Prince is more accessible and, ultimately, more enjoyable I find.

But its a close call - Joe's Garage is a masterpiece and it pre-dates Prince's rallying against the industry by some 2 or 3 decades!

Seriosuly, Savoir, try and find yourself some Squarepusher, I'm sure you'll be amazed. You might not like his style (except maybe for his jazzier tunes - see the album "Hard Normal Daddy" for these) but you will be floored regardless!

And for those that might be interested, Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) is a little like Prince - young prodigy on instruments (started life as a jazz bassist, then learned drums...), does EVERYTHING himself and is amazingly prolific (8 albums in 6 years). He also doesn't compromise - he makes the music he wants to!
