does minneapolis care about prince?

i was wondering if people in general who live in minneapolis care about prince and what he has done in the music world? do they realize that prince is the most famous person to come from that area (and bob dylan) and one of the few music stars that have had sucess worldwide?

It's not like Prince cares about Minneapolis.

Obviously, a more appropriate answer will come from someone who lives in Minneapolis.

Friends of mine who live in Minneapolis seem to think quite the opposite of what HRB and theblueangel have said - but I'll let them speak for themselves!

That's more true, we shouldn't mix in this...
Well, I've never been in Minneapolis or USA for that matter, but I don't think that people would think: ooh, Prince was born and raised here, what a thing!
Why do that, at all...?

But, HRB, that sort of "reverence" is seen across the world. Every major city you go to there are statues, monuments, or placards celebrating famous figures - be it for historical reasons or their contribution to the community.

Why do you think Minneapolis would be any different, especially when you consider that America is the throbbing world-centre of celebrity worship?!!

Not to my knowledge. But the point is that communities do become proud of famous figures from their community.

I asked if you thought that Minneapolis would be any different, to which you have said "I don't" (think that). But, the reason I posted that was because you originally said "...No! Why should they?" - so, do you think they SHOULDN'T, or do you think they DON'T?

why should they... was a retorical question.
I do believe that some people are proud of Prince to be from Minneapolis, what has he done to them since they should care more...? rolleyes
I mean, OK, so he's great musician, he's a great man, and people have a reason to be proud, but how should they show it, then?

k, I'm a life long MPLS boy. Here's my take on this. Everyone around here knows of Prince. Everyone around here has a "Prince Story." Either it's "my neighbor's son's friend went to school with him" or "my aunt used to see him at the roller rink" etc. etc. etc. In that sense, there is a bit of reverence here for Prince, and this is probably the big thing that would set us apart from other places. When you talk Prince you can engage just about anyone for a bit.

The local record shops (the independent ones) almost always stock up heavily on Prince cd's including rarities (and some bootlegs---shhh!) and have been a place to find his last releases consistently. The musician community knows his value and respects that.

However, mainstream MPLS is a lot like the rest of the world. Unaware that P is "still putting CDs out" mystified by the name change, etc. Heck, I still don't go a week without someone asking me "So, did Prince move to Canada?"

His star is still painted at 1st Ave. The Hard Rock had a big display of P memorabilia when they opened, etc.

So, huh, to answer the question: MPLS does care about Prince but is every bit as confused by him as the rest of the world.

One more thing:

about the MPLS fans/"fams"-rolleyes

We are still here but in slimming numbers every year. We have been graced with living so near our favorite artist. Who has been gracious enough to open the doors of his studios more times than I can ever count and I am grateful for that. But with that comes HUGE burn-out.

This may sound crazy to those of you not from here, but after months and years of waiting outside Paisley for hours in the cold,in the rain, in the heat and paying $20 one nite for nothing then getting in free a week later when he performs then paying $7 the next week to see him play a record and so on...it got old. The constant waiting and uncertainity wieghs down on people.

The parties here used to always be in the large soundstage and most nights it was full. Nowadays, he can't even fill the small (NPGMC) room. Yes there are still A LOT of big fans here. But the "active fans" who go to shows and the Park and everything else have dwindled down severly. Call it crazy, but burn-out has happened.

Anxiety

I've always thought of Prince being pretty connected with MPLS, as opposed to Dylan, who might be from the area, but identifies more with Greenwich Village as his point of origin (or so it seems to me, anyway). I mean, Madonna's from Michigan, but you don't hear her bragging about it.

mpls cares about prince, but it's getting harder and harder for people to know what he's up to.

for example when i called cheapo records in uptown, mpls, last night, the guy there told me that he would know if prince had a new release since uptown is prince's headquarters.

at first he seemed reluctant to believe me when i told him there'd been a new release in june. in order to prove the truth of what i was saying i told him about prince's website, then had to also tell him about the admission fee of 25$ JUST to access the NPGMC news section. then i told him about the ORG, which he said he'd check out.

i think minneapolis cares about prince but prince has been so silent about so much for so long that people just don't know what he's up to anymore

MPLS has Har Mar Superstar now. No need for Prince.
