N.E.W.S. in review gets a grade of... ... B-
Yesterday (July 27th), in the Dallas Morning News, Rob Clark says: Oh Boy, Prince's latest album is all instrumental.
News contains four tracks (“North,” “East,” West,” and “South” – get it?), each clocking in at 14 minutes. News also marks the return of Eric Leeds to the purple fold. The sax man was a star in Prince’s band during what may have been his creative peak – the late ‘80s period of Sign O’ the Tiems, The Black Album and Lovesexy. As far as instrumentals go, the jazzy tracks are fine. “North” couuld make for a fun concert jam session. “South” is ripe for a heist-movie score. You just keep wanting to hear the man sing. Prince is a fascinating artist, but hearing him mess around in the studio just isn’t that entertaining. Rob Clark I am MrVictor....

B- is about right.
It's music to play on your headphones when you're on an airplane and wanna get some sleep. It's not terribly exciting, but it's not painful to listen to, either. It's, eh, okay.

You summed up the public's feelings about this album quite succinctly, LaMont!
