I would say Sheila is the best soloist cuz with her it's also a very visual thing. U know the way she hits those cymbals first with the sticks and then just with her hands? Love her solo at the start of the Miles 2 Nowhere vid 4 example. Of the others I've on really heard John Blackwell take a true 'solo' Might be wrong and if so machinegun my ass

1st of all, it was bobby z, not david. we all know who you were talking about, but still it hurts.
it also hurts not to mention michael bland. ouch!

the drummers prince has worked with had all something
on their own. i admit that kirky was probably the weakest,
but if he`s the man behind the come on loop, then at
least he did one cool thing.
also, some people mix up musicianship and showmanship.
if sheila did play with her hands or not, who cares.
she had wonderful ideas rhythmically.

i like michael bland because he is a very funky rockdrummer,
but a very "rocky" funkdrummer all in one. a powerhouse he is, 2 and 4 like thunder. the driving force behind "2day is the 1st day of the rest of my life", "love 2 the 9`s",
"calhoun square" and "dark".

i hope you understand where i am coming from.

...oh yeah. i went to four ONA shows. i remember frankfurt, germany was the first show i witnessed
blackwell. it took 1 bar of pop life at the soundcheck
and i was knocked out of my feet.
what i mean is : lovesexy is SO sheila
and TRC is SO blackwell.
if blackwell wasn`t right with what he contributes
to the band right now, he wouldn`t be there, right?
i like his dvd also. great stuff. was worth every penny.
peace.

man i refuse to say that the dance on routine is better
than any of the ONA intro`s and vice versa.
they are all different. different attitude, sound, feel.
just different.

i love sheila, and her solos are fantastic, but i consider them more of percussion than drums. even when she's on drums, to me, they come off more percussion like...

having said that... ima go wit john blackwell. dat brotha there blows my mind!

Check out "Cloreen Bacon Skin" from the retail version of Crystal Ball. That's Morris playing on there. I always thought that Michael B. was the better drummer. That man is a beast!!! But after hearing Sheila live about three summers ago, I'm convenced she is!!! worship

harley's question is a toughie,peeps. its a subjective.
one mand or lady's opinion depends on what one wants
in their drummer.

john b is quite good...but i'll go with people who were
with p more. (they have more material for me to have
heard) its a flat out tie between Micheal B & sheila.
they come at ya differently as players and soloist...
but i digs them both EQUALLy.

sheila's flashier anatural showperson...(and she's cute
to boot) but that ain't why i dig her. her chops is
THERE. Mike B is a terror.

charles (morris ain't bad...i just wish he played more
for us to hear him in all his COOLNESS.)

During the Purple Rain Tour, Sheila had a drum solo and Prince said "Not bad, for a girl"..HAHAHAHA

But seriously, John Blackwell is the best. I have seen him at a drum clinic and he knows how to handle those stix.

What? Have you SEEN John Blackwell play? Invest in some bootlegs from the ONA tour and hear John solo.

On a pure "technical ability" level, its Blackwell by a country mile!

Don't get me wrong, his other drummers have been fantastic (except for Kirk J - even I'd give him a run for his money!), but Blackwell just has everything and more.

For showmanship, the cap would have to go to Sheila - she really made watching a drummer exciting! And Bland was awesome, no doubts there.
...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

The tricks are great, but the licks are predictable. Michael B and Sheila E. for me all the way.
