still does not explain why he is asking that bootlegs be mailed to him. WB has no control over vault leakage

I thought about this aspect of the whole thing, and came to one possible conclusion (I may be reaching here). With some of the bootlegs coming back to him, this may prove (at least to P) that those songs were on some of the demo tapes given to WB execs to listen to. Maybe he knows that it was the only way some of those songs leaked to the public, as it was mentioned in DMSR, I believe. It was known that some of the execs had tapes freely laying around, in their cars, etc.

You are absolutley right.

i work at a record company and when an artist gives us the new record it'll be at least 4 or 5 tracks over. The tracks get wittled down to an agreed amount. What happens to those tracks depends, (b-sides, next album, etc) sometimes they never see the light of day.

Those CDR'S are distributed thoughout the whole company for the marketing, VP's, promotions, sales peeps to decide how to work the project. This can be 8months prior to release. This is normal practice in a record company.

Taking this into account and how Prince would chop and change his mind due to his high output - it's virtually assured that the origonal Purple Rain (with all the outtakes) existed in the in-tray of many divisions of WB. probably even some of Dreams / triple album Sign O the Times.

In addition - Record companies pay for the costs of the studio (engineers, studio, intsruments, etc..), they often get sent music as a sort of progress report. These are mostly demos' or works in progress. These are also sent around for opinions. So that's another way of getting bootlegs.

A freind @ Warners has a copy of an early sequenced Diamonds and Pears with Schoolyard on it. it's not particualy special. just a CDR. but as i said this is quite common.
