The New Masters

Remember when Prince announced he was gonna re-record his entire back catalogue?

After my initial amusement at this statement, I have to say I was quite interested in hearing them. The originals will always exist, but I think it would have at least been of interest to fans to hear what Prince in 1999 thought of his back catalogue.

Add this to my chagrin at Prince's lack of remixes. I adore the 12" mixes, but Prince must be one of the least remixed artists of his generation.

Anyone know how far he got in his re-recording of the "new masters"?

He probably done them all in a day and they're sitting in his vault along with lots of other shit that will never see the light of day.

I wonder if he has anything in his will re the vault. Like 'when I die all my money should be used to issue CD's of all the songs in the vault. I hand this task to Warner Bros' lol

Boris, do you how different they were? I mean did he re-record songs, or just drop out/put in the odd part from the original.

I wonder what Sister: The New Master sounds like biggrin

Some of them sound very different, and some of them sound
almost the same. He re-recorded them all from scratch, but
I expect some of them have parts lifted from the originals
like on 1999.

Interestingly, Prince himself has mentioned that the song
'Sign O The Times' was one of the tracks that only sounded
right when he did it the same way as the original.

I remember hearing this and I said at the time there was no way he would do it. Of course I was right. It was something he felt compelled to do for a moment, but then realized it was incredibly impractical which was obvious from the start.

He actually DID do it, he confirmed it himself
a couple of years ago. He said that 'Soft And Wet'
was the final track to be re-recorded, and that
Larry had to leave the room for some of the more
x-rated earlier material (like half the Dirty Mind
album). He was going to release a 'best of' the
New Masters as a double CD, which would have also
included a couple of brand new tracks as well.
Of course this got shelved last year and has never
been mentioned since.

I thought it was common knowledge. Prince mentioned it
himself many times in interviews and online at the time.

Personally,I would never buy these New Masters.I'm just not interested in hearing "new" versions of classic songs.I'd rather have the original albums re-mastered.I'm sure that,on these new versions, many of the lyrics have been altered, which is very disappointing.I doubt that Prince would ever release these new recordings.

If they sound as weak as "The Purple Medley" mix, then he can burn them as far as im concerned.

I don't recall P saying that he had finished them. I do, however, recall him mentioning working on them and Mr. Hayes commenting that he was working on the keyboard parts for them.

The last I heard was that they were working on them, but nothing ever materialized. There were even plans to play the albums live in order and record them. As far as I know, none of this was ever finished. Do you have some inside info about this? Was this ever talked about in UPTOWN or any other magazine?

This is why I miss THE PRINCE FAMILY NEWSLETTER. They printed every article, etc. about the man. He couldn't fart and not have it reported in their mag.

Prince himself announced that the re-masters were all
finished on his website a couple of years ago (I can't
remember the exact date). They had a private party at
Paisley Park to celebrate their completion. This is
when he mentioned about Soft and Wet being the last
track to be re-recorded and Larry having to leave the
room for some of the more racy tracks. I'm suprised
no-one else remembers!!
