TURNING A PRINCE HATER INTO A PRINCE FAM...How would you convert?? I let my father listen to Venus De Milo a few years back and Eric Leeds's Times Squared, but I did not tell him WHO it was, knowing that he absolutely HATES Prince. Well, after he insisted (he LOVED the music), I told him it was Prince; then he said that he didn't like the music anymore.
It was heartbreaking, but I think that I was able to [tenuously] turn a Prince hater into a [temporary] Prince Fam. How would you go about conversion? What Prince albums/cuts would you introduce to a P-hater to a Prince-lover?

Wouldn't bother. It's a total waste of time, not to mention kind of selfish.
I understand your reasoning though, he's your Dad and you want him to approve of your good taste in music.I tried this for years with my Dad ("DAD,LISTEN TO THIS!!"), he respects Prince as a musician and live performer. Though at the end of the day, feels Prince tries too hard to cover too many bases musically but has his moments. I certainly wouldn't ever try to make him into a stinking 'fam' though. (No doubt i'll let him borrow the vegas DVD though!)

Converting is not selfish. For the same reason religious people try to convert, so do I try to convert people into fans of good music. I think it is beneficial for them.
In both religion, and in music, the facts present themselves, and people should be able to make an objective decision about what they choose (which is why I am not religious). The best way is to make them a mix of all sorts of things, by a variety of different artists. Be sure to include things you know they like. Make 1/3 of the songs by Prince. Do a tracklist, but don't list the artists. Make sure some of the P songs are instrumentals, and that the other songs provide an array of vocal styles (NO FALSETTO!!). You know, his distorted Camille voice, a soul song, rock song, whatever, you get the jist of it. Mix these songs evenly throughout the mix-cd. If you are asked to say the names of the artists, give the name of the band instead. You know, say it's by NPG, the revolution, Madhouse, or my favorite "P. Rogers Nelson" . Find out what they like and what they don't like, and make them another mix CD. Don't rush them into Prince. After a couple of these, make half the tracks by Prince. Then all of them. Then list the artists. Then see how shocked they become. I made 3 people become avid Prince collectors within a year of doing this. Right now, I can think of another three that are about to tip over. It works, if the music works, and their minds are free of pre-conceived notions of the music. Give it a try. "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring faith. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal" - Carl Sagan

I just lend them a copy of SOTT. If they don´t like that, then it´s a waste of time trying to convert them.

I don't think there's any real way of "converting" someone, you either like Prince or you don't.
My advice would be just the play his msuic around that person (the obscure stuff, not the hits) and see what their reaction is to it; if it's good, tell them it's him, if it's bad, don't waste your time. As for the people like your father, just forget about it. People like that, (not saying your father is bad or anything) are, in the long run, cheating themselves out of great muisc, their loss ~KiKi

Not sure about conversion. The first three letters and all that. Even Cyrus didn't know, if you know what I mean! --------
