I got a jones, Martha Oh yeah, it be like this (I can't have a hug) I can't have a hug (unless) unless I have a kiss it seems fairly straightforward, he's got an addiction, he can't have a hug unless he also gets a kiss. But who knows, that whole Christ, Petrine, Johannine thing you've got going might be right on point. But I doubt it. hmm ok, sounds logical, has Prince used Martha in other songs as well? Not that I know of, although if he has somebody will certainly say so. He does use Martha again later in the song "Like a wildcat, Martha, in a celibate rage I want your love, in my dirty little cage Can u understand, Martha?" "I'll show my... If you show your... I can't help it, Martha " Whoever he's talking about, it doesn't sound like any part of the Bible I've read, (maybe Song of Solomon, but not that hottt!). . Or maybe it was some other girl he was banging? "You can always renegotiate a record contract. You just go in and say, 'You know, I think my next project will be a country and western album.'"

right. Don't try to read more into prince's music('cause if you do you end up being horribly confused), not everything he does is based on something religious. I swear someone will come up with a thread trying to find the deeper meaning in "darling nikki". Anyway, "jones" is a slang term for addiction, not just heroin addiction. In other words, He's telling martha (kim) that he's got an addiction (to her I'm guessing). ~KiKi

And the religious meaning of 'Darling Nikki' is...? Oh the mass confusion! My kitty wants to play...

Martha Wash, the singer of Two Tons of Fun fame always comes to mind when I listen to that song. Prince did quote James once, saying "I like 'em fat, I like 'em proud .." An d Martha was big and beautiful ...
But it's probably just a name that sounded right for the song.
