tricky99 said: As always Brendan is on point. Any piece of work that has any complexity to it should be listened to many times before a conclusion on its worth can be decided. NEWS is much to involved and adventuous to be dismissed so easily. Seems a lot of people look at music like fast food. A lot of art reveals its self only after multiple experiences. Folks might not like NEWS but i hear all the work and thought that went into it. Its not something just anyone could create. I respect people when they say they don't connect with it. What i don't like is when people just throw words like "shit" or "crap" around. Those are insults to the creator of the art. If nothing else respect the artist. I attempted to read Toni Morrison's Tar baby years ago and for whatever reasons i couldn't get into it and put it down. That however didn't lead me to disprect the art or the artist. It just wasn't what i was feeling then. I might pick it up now and find it brilliant. A lot of the remarks here on the org reveal more about the person writing then the object they are critiqing. Nasty comments invaribly reveal nasty people. Look at who's been snipped on this thread; it's not difficult to understand where they're coming from and why. Of course, it's okay to dislike anything but it reads better if people at least form an intelligent point of view as to why they dislike these things. Stand alone comments like 'JWs suck dick', 'N.E.W.S. is shit', 'The Rainbow Children is elevator music', say more about the listener's intelligence, or lack of, than the issues they wish to discuss (but are seemingly unable to).

... Anyone wanna hear the new Prince album?! I'm really excited, can't wait to hear it. BlueNote

Anyone noticed, that some parts of "SOUTH" sound a little bit like "Osaka" from the Soundcheck files? Listen to the bass line...

not a bad album, neither excellent IMHO;
i also think there's many unknown local jazz funk bands that can do the same jams & even better, and that Weather Report or Courtney Pine are a much better choice if you like this kind of music.

papabeat said: I partially agree with you. Context is great at adding dimensions to art that wasn't there before. Lovesexy is a better album (to me) knowing about the demons that were apparently chasing Prince during the Black Album saga. But it was a great album (again, to me) even without knowing that. And knowing what the artist's goal was certainly helps in measuring whether they reached that goal in the listener's mind. As a screenwriter, I've certainly heard that criticism. But the fact is, the art still has to be there during those times when context is absent. Remember, Prince is the guy who tells journalists that him music speaks for itself. It better.
Agreed. Don't get me wrong. I think someone can absolutely love or deplore something without having ever given a thought to what the artist is attempting. I'm just saying that I'll take my chances with the hard-earned opinions over that which so obviously reveals that the person has barely even attempted to scratch the surface. This rush-to-judgement philosophy in our fast-food culture is what bothers me. And believe me, I'm guilty of it myself. It's hard not to be, especially with a logical brain that tries to seek instant order in everything. If there is any doubt in my mind at all with regards to quality (which is pretty much true of anything that falls between utter awfulness and “When Doves Cry”) I really try hard to ignore those initial judgmental thoughts (good or bad), as they can cripple you from ever hearing what you might otherwise hear. Mentally I just keep thinking, “Maybe, I’m note sure yet” every time my mind is trying to outright reject or accept something, until I reach the point at which I think I have given the work a fair chance at revealing itself for the good or the bad. Brendan, do you understand how your enjoyment of 'With You' changed after the Celebration performance last year? And how do you equate this change in perception with all your thoughts above?

Let's just say it took me years to get over the initial knee-jerk reaction I had with this song ("Bloody hell, what's this country twang twang thing that makes me wince wince and skip skip.) Even later when I dropped the country bias that initial opinion was still very hard to shed. Hearing it in a completely different setting was like hearing it with unbiased ears for the first time. It’s a good song that I could have been enjoying years earlier. You only hurt yourself by looking at music as categories, rather than something that can potentially move you to one degree or another, or not. Although my 2nd copy was stolen from my mailbox...I havent "absorbed" NEWS fully.
But it's a logical progression from Xpectation. Sounds great to me. Reminds me of a less comercial sounding Jeff Beck -Wired.

My opinion on NEWS is that I don't really like it. I appreciate how one might have to listen to a particular piece several times to see it's genious...and I have experienced that. Most recently, the Everlasting Now became my favorite song on TRC after having listened to it several times. The title cut, on the other hand, instantly became a favorite the first time I heard it.
With NEWS though, the songs are 14 mins long...I almost don't have the attention span to even attempt to listen repeatedly. Perhaps that my fault, although I admit that it might be something I'd play for a non-Prince fan who wants to hear some experimental shit. NEWS isn't awful by any means...I just don't regard it as highly as most of Prince's other input.

NEWS is very difficult for me to digest without any vocals. That's not a criticism of the music, it just doesn't feel complete qua Prince to not hear his best musical instrument. And yet I do enjoy it still, as I do Xpectation. I feel him still. Fear is the mind-killer.
