The biggest defender of the NPS album is Tom Moon, of the Philidelphia Enquirer, who said the album was meant as a party album, not a serious album, and should be excepted with that in mind. He actually gave that a better review than Maxwell's Embria. All you others say Hell Yea!!

You are not alone! Freaks is just a little too freaky at first...I didn't pay it much attention until after I heard it sampled on GCS2000 and was like, "whoa...I know that song...I like that song...wait, which song is that?!" Fear is the mind-killer.

I´m not alone! You know, the same thing that you described has happened to me many times lately. I hear a song on an album and don´t care too much about it. Then I hear it in a whole other context and suddenly it sounds much better! I don´t know if it´s because I was prejudiced for some reason the first time or if I was simply in a situation/mood/context that suited the song better the second time. Being prejudiced is actually a big problem for me when it comes to music. The other day I heard a Justin Timberlake song without knowing it was him. When I got to know it was him I got angry at myself for liking a Justin Timberlake song...and then I got angry at myself for getting angry at myself just for liking a Justin Timberlake song.

I just got one thing to say about this cd, besides tracks 2,4,7,8 and the hidden track, it is one of the worst that Prince has made. The cd is filled with weak melodies, extended beats that go nowhere, and bad songwriting. It's also funny that it is listed as an NPG cd, but Prince did like 90% of the work on it.

So know what you mean about liking a track and then getting angry at liking it!! I love Freaks on this side - actually, it was one that I found I instantly connected with when I first got the album. Don't understand all of it, but this I did it for me... 'God is love, Love is God, Simple and plain'.

I think when Prince learned how much everybody hated NPS he showed them what's really bad by releasing Rave. NPS is mindless fun. "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

I like Wated Kisses, Come On. The One, Push It Up, Freaks on This Side, & half of the NPS song. I think as a whole the album is a little weak, but very enjoyable nonetheless. I do not like the cover at all. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

It will grow in popularity as time goes by, just like Come. Aging well, like a fine wine.
Damn...this thread has caused me to spin "Freaks on this Side." It is truly something SPECIAL. Take a listen and pay special attention to how strange and original it is. It's not pop--you don't hear such a strange arrangement on the radio. It's almost dark...or apocalyptical...and yet not. I think the word Prince would use is, in a positive way is: "sick." On the topic of not liking something and then liking it...music listening is a learning process. Part of enjoying music is anticipating the melody, which is why we're able to sing along, we know what's coming next having heard a song many times. Your brain has to get used to a certain groove before it can play along with a song in this manner, even if you're not singing. So without that prior knowledge, the first spin or two of a good song can seem rather flat at first. Fear is the mind-killer.

I was afraid of that. That's the scariest picture of him I've ever seen. Looks like a cross between P in Joker mode and Robert Smith from the Cure.

When I first heard it I thought that Prince couldn't sink any deeper (little did I know at that point...). The production wasn't exactly great, the beats are kinda plastic and I hated the ballad (still do).
But later I started to appreciate the album for it's funkiness and fun. I really like most of the mid/uptempo tracks and I love Waisted Kisses. All 'n' all a very agreable album... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

This is one of my favorite albums from Prince (of course after such as Purple Rain, Lovesexy, The Rainbow Children and SOTT). I think in this album, he really hit up on some old funk songs, especially with the horny horns on Freaks on this side.

I remember buying NPS upon its release and thinking it was just really flat and kinda boring. I still think that about it overall but certain tracks are ok; Until U're In My Arms Again, Come On & Wasted Kisses. Apart from those three I really have to be in the mood to spin this album. The horns on Freaks On This Side are cool, tho'.

It's still nice to play "Mad Sex" in your car after
you've added another bizar sexual experience to your list of personal freakiness. You know, when you're on your way home again and your hands stick to the drivingwheel cuz even after a shower your body still sweats from the exhausting fcking and as you smoke your cigarette, you can still taste and smell... And then you just crank up the volume till the bass makes the dashboard moan as you sing along in your most vile and nasty voice. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Something about that album that puts a smile on my face. The first track is a really nice one, for bein on the NPS cd.. the one's I stated above are the top songs.. and yes, it has deserved a spot in my player over time.. It sounds great.

As Prince albums go, NPS is great because it isn't trying too hard to be the best ever, and as such it goes off into some really interesting places. The title track Gemini rap is really sassy, yet flows back into the melody. The whole album has a lot of Prince's signature production tricks, strange noises and voices, unconventional bridges, the works. Classic Prince. There are some great standout tracks on this CD...NPS, Come On, The One, and Wasted Kisses is so good it hurts. It remains one of my all-time favorite Prince albums...it reminds me a lot of Come, and will age just well. Come was dismissed when it first came out too, if you'll recall. Great reply.. my words exactly.
