The 'New Power Soul' album

I am listening to it on my headphones and fancy talking about it. What do you think of the album?

Awww, I like NPS.

I'd put it on a par with being of it's time, yet commercial, along with D&P.

It's just a fun little CD, it doesn't try to be anything other than a CD full of fun, dance, pop tunes.

I think I like it because it was the first Prince release that came after I got the net, and was the first tour that I got to experience as a Prince rather than a casual fan - my first aftershow too!

NPS is fun, t'is all!

I was afraid of that. That's the scariest picture of him I've ever seen. Looks like a cross between P in Joker mode and Robert Smith from the Cure. eek

Ya!

Scary pic, shows reality a little closer than we might else see.

Surely he sanctioned the pics for this shoot, the other one is even worse.

It's like the recent pic of Pete Burns.

I actually dont mind New Power Soul. Its got some fun tracks on it, 'Come On', 'When U Love Somebody', etc plus the very sweet 'Until Ur in my Arms Again' and the sensual 'The One'. I also in someways prefer it 2 the thuggishness of Exodus. Yeah, I find it quite an enjoyable listen.

It got cut down really bad because people expected The Dawn or somethign to follow Emancipation...

As Prince albums go, NPS is great because it isn't trying too hard to be the best ever, and as such it goes off into some really interesting places. The title track Gemini rap is really sassy, yet flows back into the melody. The whole album has a lot of Prince's signature production tricks, strange noises and voices, unconventional bridges, the works. Classic Prince.

There are some great standout tracks on this CD...NPS, Come On, The One, and Wasted Kisses is so good it hurts.

It remains one of my all-time favorite Prince albums...it reminds me a lot of Come, and will age just well. Come was dismissed when it first came out too, if you'll recall.

Is the one on the left REALLY Pete Burns? I don't have any doubt about the one on the right, though. wink

FunkMistress, I love this picture of Prince cos he's smiling, and there aren't many of them and I think your comments are quite nasty, actually!

Pete Burns - love the eye make up.

As for NPS and the music. I love what Prince does with his vocals on this album, he goes deep quite a few times and he sounds utterly stunning. I love all the high notes too, just that the deep ones happen less often, so I see them as a treat! Overall, I really love this album, I agree with you Teller, it has been dismissed, but only cos it's been compared with other albums.

JD, I haven't listened to Exodus the whole way through yet. The tape was leant to me from someone who I'm not in contact with anymore, so I didn't buy it. I may get round to listening to it some more.

Like LittlePill said, I found it inspiring when it first came out. It is funny how that happens, I think it has something to do with being able to identify and understand the album more at a later date. I have only just started to listen to Graffiti Bridge. I am still a bit resistant!

it's a very uneven album IMHO. the greatness of the one and wasted kisses, and a few others that are alright make it worth owning to me, but it is near the bottom of the pile, as it is one of my least favorites of his.

someone should do a voting one album off thing to find out which albums are prefered the most

People are stupid. Just look at the charts.

The bottom line for me is that this album is Prince pop at his best.

Pop music in 1998 was pretty shitty, not like in the 80s, and this is about as good as you're gonna get from Prince trying to do pop in 1998.

I think NPS is much better than Rave, but let's face it, compared to Parade, The Black Album or 1999, and that jazz, NPS is a pile of steaming dogshit.

I do like this album. It'll always have a special place in my heart cos I was able to see so much of it played out at the Park before the cd came out. With tracks like Mad Sex, Come On, The One and Wasted Kisses, it keeps me coming back

BUT it does have 2 of the worst P songs ever, IMO...Push It Up and Freaks On This Side..those chants just make my ears bleed
