Okay there's been a big arguement going on in the music non prince related forum, about who created the sounds of neo soul. Alot of People credited great acts such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie, but I said the main influence of the music was none other then the royal man himself, Prince. Yes it is known I am a big fan of Princes music, but it is also known I am not a ass kisser which means,I tell it like it is, meaning I tell the truth.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, however. I can't stress enough how long Prince has been in the record business. I mean if you look at it, a whole generation was raised off his music alone, as well as MJ music and as well as Madonna Music. So it wouldn't be a shock to me, that somewhere along the way Prince inspired someone, or something or somebody in the music business and I'm here to say there's probably alot of musicians out there, besides Lenny Kravtiz who's been inspired by his music, more then we think...

I don't know about y'all, but I have noticed how alot of stars are quick to say they've been soo inspired by MJ music, but when it comes 2 Prince, it's almost as if his name is sinestor . Okay so maybe I'm exaggerated a little bit, but I have seriously noticed that.

For example, the first thing that comes to mind is Missy Elliot. she's not really classifield into neo soul music,but she is hip-hop and R&B. Now if you listen to her last couple of albums, it sounds like Prince 2 me. Especailly in the song Pussycat, that's Prince all the way. I don't know if knew Missy Ellotte produced Tweet's album under a alias name (wondering where she got that ideal) But alot of songs on the tweet most definetly sound like Prince to me ...

Yet in a interview when asked who's your main influence. what does she say? Prince

back to the neo soul. I don't need 2 rant on about D'anglo, but D'angelo was like one of the first people who came out with this new sound people are calling Neo Soul now. I think alot of People like artist today where inspired by his whole approach to soulful music. The only thing is, what some may have thought sounded new, wasn't new at all, in fact D'angelo has even been accused of Copying the old man sound.

Point in case, after the Brown Sugar album was released D'angelo produced alot of different clones, who has that purple sound to me. Now I might be mistaken, but that's what I hear, straight up purple music in the year 2003.

Now if you take a talented brotha like Prince who's been here for the last two decades, rather people want to admit or not, he will influence somebody, if not a whole generation alone. For somebody who's a music fanatic such as myself, Prince music is so profond, that if he didn't influence or inspire somebody I would begin 2 think they're somebody kinda conspiracy going on.

My point is, are people really that ashamed to admit how much they're into his music? Sure you can rant to about him amongst other Prince fan, but do you share you music with people who aren't in the purple realm ?


And when are the going to start giving tha brotha some credit, I swear? Imagine eating a whole box of cracker jack only to find out there's no prize inside. That's kind of how it is when you been around for so long, doing what you love do, what u most passionate yet nobody there to recognize your accomplishments or credentials.. unless you're a reclusive person I would think it would then be all in vain, but uhm that's just me...

I think Prince has an influence, but not a dominating one, not that I can hear anyway.

Most neo-soul is quite flat and boring musically.

I hope that isn't attributed to Prince!

I'd like to see more artists like Felix and Grand Funk Pubahs who are influenced by Prince's funk/electronic music.

Much more interesting than so-called "neo-soul".

That's the Neptunes for you, they were all over the show last year.

two things-

1- I credit Curtis Mayfield for neo-soul.

2- The Neptunes are great! I am friedns with the guys in Spymob (they played and toured on the In Search Of album). They are great guys and killer musicians!

when prince was on the cover of muzik mag a dnace mag in the UK, they said he was the most influential figure in pop music today, saying hes influenced most of dance hip hop r&b etc

currently at number in the uk is a cover of a transvision vamp song with the melody almost exact to 1999 and manic monday, but the TV version was 1989, still copy though really.

a friend mentioned missy elliot, supposedly she cited the song thunder as the exact reason she used a bangra style sound on her later stuff, she namechecks prince too, as does eminem, who supposedly said he wanted 8 mile to be the purple rain of his generation sort of thing. and now eminem is famous for producing loads of other acts and stuff, and i think he must have got that idea off of prince, who did it in the 80s. saying that though, dr.dre did it in the 90s so who knows for sure?
