Good stuff in all of them, but it is one side of things.

I own issues 1-48 of Uptown and drove 50 miles when a new copy came out.I don't buy it like I used to because of the crisis.

Prince:A Documentary Parts 1&2,Days of Wild,DSMR,Purple Reign,Prince:A Pop Life,& The Complete Guide To the Music of Prince are all must haves for any Prince fan.The newest book Possessed is a good book if the last Purple Reign cannot be found.

Uptown at one time was a truly great read because of the info they had.Their objectivity was tainted with the lawsuit, however they remain the best for pure analysis of the music.

I don't subscribe to Uptown, but I pick it up at Tower Records. It's the best Prince fanzine of all-time,with lots of thorough,in-depth articles and interviews, filled with invaluable information about Prince's music.

'Days Of Wild' and 'Turn It Up' are both excellent books, discussing Prince's music in great detail. You may also wanna check out the "DMSR" book, which many fans on this site are always praising. It's a well-written book.

I subscribe to Uptown, have done since about '94, and will continue until they publish no more, which I hope is a VERY long time yet.

They are THE ONLY people doing ANY serious publicised research on Prince's recordings - Prince is a fucking idiot for not cutting an official deal with Uptown - NO official website/magazine/outlet has EVER given as much impartial and historically/technically accurate information on Prince's recordings as Uptown has.

They deserve every bit of respect they get, and I hope to see them continue for a long time yet.

Which reminds me to renew my subscribtion, I wouldn't think twice about subscribing to Uptown, but I sure as shit thought twice, thrice and more about joining the NPGMC.

(I don't work for them/have an afflilation with them, but no one else is giving accurate historical information on Prince's past recordings, they are to be commended by all fans, whether they buy the magazine or not, the information they have unearthed and publicised has given us more than any other informational outlet in the history of Prince music).

Prince does not need to sign a deal with Uptown. Then the mag would turn into Controversy.

How many remember that magazine ?

Uptown ain't always accurate...but they're thorough, I'll give them that. Mostly its just their opinions.

DMSR, DOW and TIU 2.0 are the best books about Prince out there period. UPTOWN is a very well researched magazine. The funny thing is that it is so well researched, that people take it for granted that they'll get it all right.

In that sense, UPTOWN has been a victim of their own success. They wrote so much detail and had so much information that they wrote themselves into a hole.

Yes, they have their opinions, but their factual articles (fewer and farther between) are simply put, the BEST information you'll ever find about Prince.

Trust me on this one. Their contacts are amazing.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

donR,i buy selected issues of Uptown when i go to TOWER
records here in chicago. its a decent magazine. great
interviews. (there was a recent one with prince's cousin
CHAzz Smith that was interesting...chazz talked about
prince from his Grand Central Days with morris ,andre.and
company.)

days of wild & turn it up are highly reccommended by this
old school fan. if you want the facts about what prince
recorded-these 2 books are IT.

DMSR is just as good-with per nilson's writing more accurate
than alex hahn's. (not that alex's book is bad...cuz it ain't) but DMSr is worth getting.

i don't have POP life. by dave hill...but i did read it years ago. not bad.
