But I can do without Nothing Compares 2 U. Yeah, I didn't see any ONA shows (he didn't tour in Australia dammit!), but I was a little dissapointed in ONA Live. All the new tracks are great on that set, but everything else I'd heard a millions times before - especially Raspberry Beret, Take Me With U & Nothing Compares 2 U. It happens to all artists, they slow down, churn out a record, but when it comes to a tour, they rely on the back catalog.
I mean look at the late Barry White, he was releasing CD's all through the 90's, but if u go and see a show, it was all the 70's hits being performed. It happens to all artists, the only one that seems to be breaking that rule with that is Carlos Santana Xperience the Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com/

'Cause he needs to make his money out of touring, his records don't really sell anymore... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Prince has to do the hits because that's what the casual fans want to hear.Like all artists,Prince wants to sell tickets and make money. He can throw in a few of the new songs, but in the end,it's the hits that most people want to hear.

He hasn't met that happy medium. If he wants casual fans and folx to continue coming to the shows, he'll need to keep in some more hits. The 3 or4 that he played isn't gonna cut it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

This line of thinking freaks me out. Yeah I got the albums and the 12"es, yeah I know the unreleased stuff, yes I'm an NPGMC member, yes I'm into TRC and Xpectation and NEWS but I still LOVE to hear the hits! They're great songs!

Always the same...
If he would not play any of his hits, this thread would be called "why didn't we get more hits on the ONA Tour". If you look at other threads, alot of org-people are whining because of the past Purple Rain/SOTT/Lovesexy times. Contradiction wherever you go...

Actually I though the ONA tour wasn't that full of hits. TRC dominated the set list and alot of the older stuff were more favorites than hit songs. Songs like IIWYG, Adore, She's Always in My hair, Strange Relationship, When u were mine, Anna Stesia are definitely fan/org favorites but they were never hit singles.
Granted he did throw in the occasional Purple Rain/Rasberry Beret (but no PR when I saw him) . I think that's the balance he's struck for now. Alot of new stuff, past songs that are fan favorites that people on the org would appreciate, and two or three obvious hits to keep the casual fans happy. Now the Hit & Run tour was all about giving the masses what they wanna hear. [This message was edited Fri Jul 11 10:27:19 PDT 2003 by Universaluv]

Because whenever a legendary artists starts singing all new songs in concert, it's like saying "hey everybody now's the time to go to the bathroom if you want"

I was not disappointed with the ONA tour at all. IMO it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I had great seats too which was wonderful. I was happy with his song choices, but of course seeing as I am a huge fan I would've liked to hear more obscure songs instead of the hits. There are not many artists that compare to Prince live. He knows how to put on a show and how to entertain us whether we are old fans or new.

He played a good chunk of TRC in London and enough of ONA. I was delighted with the sets he played and didn't think there were that many hits in there. It seemed more of a show for fans than casuals IMHO. RIP

I thought the balance was right.I saw him first night in Manchester and it was great.I was a little disappointed he dug Purple Rain out as earlier in the show, some silly bint behind me screamed "just play Purple Rain!!" at the top of her lungs. That was while he was giving his media speech before Strange Relationship so basically she was giving him no respect.

if I EVER hear the raspberry beret/take me with you medley again, it'll be too soon... then again it's become a safe time for me to use the bathroom/smoke...so maybe he should just keep playing it

It's funny. I went to see the ONA show in London and went with a couple of very casual Prince fans. They complained that there weren't enough of the hits and it was full of "endless funk jams." The fact is that they weren't "jams" at all. Prince stuck quite faithfully to the TRC record.
It's useless even trying to educate some people on good music. Guess you can't win with some people. In many people's eyes Prince hasn't done anything worth listening to since 1993. "Who? Prince? Is he still making music."
