I'm saying that through the 80s and 90s A Clear Percentage Of the General Public thought that Prince was Gay Because Of His Image Of High Voice, High Heals, Lace Clothing, Heavy Make-up etc...

1. Many singers sing in a high voice (falsetto), this isn't exclussive to Prince
2.he wore the high heels to look taller (the man IS 5'2)
3.It was the 80s, everyone wore lace
4. Once again, it was the 80s, even morris, yes morris, wore makeup
When Joan Rivers hosted the Tonight Show back in the day she was interviewing Vanity. She asked Vanity if Prince was Gay? Vanity imediately said NO! Definately NOT!
Joan Replied Back : OH PLEASE!!! HE MAKES MICHAEL JACKSON LOOK LIKE A GREEN BARET!!! The Audience Roars!!!

Joan is a rude, crude, mean, heartless (she made the girls from "facts of life" cry), annoying hag, end of story

Prince Screamed Very Tallented FAG back then~

...And why did the public (FULL of homophobes) buy his records?

So Lets Watch And Listen Because He Might Do Or Say Something Controversial~ The There Came A Time When The General Public Lost Interest.

Prince Used That Image To Draw People Into The Music. And It worked. At The Cost Of A Lot Of People Thinking He Really Is A Fag.

Those People Are Wrong For Thinking That Way But That Is Reality Folks.

Prince Is Still Making Money From Those Days. And At the Same Time Preaching Against Those Images. And Ways...

Who Cares? I am Just Pointing Out That Homoerotic Behavior Did Factor Into Princes Fame. Not completely but it certainly did and probably always will. No matter how much he changes.

He matured, it's not his fault that the last time he had a commercial hit his image was that way. And anyway, he's not speaking out aginst what he did, did he ever say "don't buy 'dirty mind'? Don't think so. rolleyes
The only things he has ever spoke out against was "the black album", bootlegs, and prejudice.
Stop trying to pick at him.
Homoerotic Lyrics:

Uptown- Girl Shes Just A "MAN", U Know? She Even Made Love 2 Me, Best Thing I Ever Had, I Never Talk 2 Strangers But This Time Its Alright. She Got Me Hot, I could'nt Stop, Good Times were Rollin All Night, All Night, Yeh~
Everybody Drag, Its All About Being Free!

it's "she's just gone mad",
Head - As Far As I Knew Was a term for Sucking Dick~

yeah, and he's talking about a girl doing that to him (ever wonder why lisa's on there?)

Jack U Off - Physical Action Done 2 Dick~

to "jack" means to touch in a sexual way, "fingering" could also mean to "jack"

These were controversial songs because these were terms that were commonly used discribing sexual deeds done 2 Dick~

yes, and in all of those, he was talking about a girl doing that to him[/quote]

How Famous Did Prince Get For These Lyrics? How many people were first introduced to Prince with this music?

Many were "first introduced" with "1999" or "purple rain", which have heterosexual lyrics

lovebizzare, thanks for being one of the few that actually makes sense on the Org.
Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Honestly, I never thought Prince was gay. And Im in the generation of "You like Prince? That weird fag??" shoot3 rolleyes
I thought mostly that Prince was in2 playing mind games & of course, nod that he didnt give a damn what you said or thought because in the end, it was just a test.
Prince understood how he would be viewed but he challenged it anyways, continually sticking to what he thought was 'fly' and 'the latest fashion' in his style, music, his thoughts and his words. clapping
But yes, Prince playing the sex card: who do I like: boys or girls? was a factor in his fame nod He kept people guessing "Why is he dressed like that?" "Why did he do those dance steps with those GUYS?" (i.e. Gett Off performances when the guys fell on him from the back) As well as Prince playing the: what race am I? factor lured alot of different people to like him. Just recently until he decided to start saying he was black (2003) was the ONLY TIME I've EVER heard Prince label himself a race. Thats just ME
But I think those days are over for Prince, he has nothing else to prove. disbelief Every page you turn in a magazine if they talk about Prince, the term "musical genius" is instantaneous, his mention of influence is out of every music genre stars' mouth. heart
And even though he didnt give a damn whilst he was stirring the masses back in the day, underneath it all: he seemed like he hoped for acceptance, understanding and unity with him, with each other and most of all with GOD. yes peace music pray

uh, no. You're reffering to noun form of the word, I was reffering to the verbal, slang form of the word which you originally brought up.
Don't try to be a smart alleck with me, you'll never succeed.

If you're trying to say that I'm a follower, you must not know me very well, I am anything BUT a follower.
But then again, if disagreeing with you makes me a follower, well, then yeah, I guess I am one.

i have to agree with Cherrie regarding the mind games. The guy was and is very intelligent (note: very intelligent people are also capable of screwing up, lol) and when he uttered the line "you never woulda drank my coffee if i didn't serve u cream.." it was the emphatic slam dunk on that issue IMO. Yes he did have the various influences...not many black folks listen to Joni Mitchell, lets face it, lol...but he figured out how to make it work for him in a way that allowed him and his band(s) to be free to go wherever whenever musically.

That same concept is how i view him in terms of self-presentation and sexuality... what Harlepolis said about being a freak? Luv, you and a million others, lol (self included). Counterculturalists? Lyrically, he flips so many scripts ESPECIALLY in the gender game that its impossible to be a fan (of his early music at least) and NOT have some countercultural tendencies. But the culture has changed, and he's not as singularly freaky as he once was...which is a testament to his great influence and not just musically. He took Little Richard's flamboyance and turned it up a few levels all the while being able to maintain a black and (black affected) fan base because of the funk, and frankly the whole 'Time/Christopher Tracy' aspect of his personality. In some way, I feel the homoerotic and androgynous aspects wouldn't have gone over nearly as well overall without the hypersexual focus on women. Susan, Vanity, Sheila, Susanna, Vanity, Kim Basinger, Mayte, Mani...and Vanity horny, did i say Vanity?? lol...sorry, where was i?
Its the mix and the tension of how he carried it off that was/is genius. He's been able to put forth many parts of his persona lyrically and in presentation, that the gay community feels he's one of them, the freaks (of all sexual preferences) feels he's one of them, the brothers feel he's one of them, and the women with a sense of Pussy Control feel he's one of them too!

Yes the courting of homoerotic imagery was a factor in how he's been viewed by gay men and women, and is one reason (among many) that he's the patron saint of straight freaks at the same time. I've never thought Prince was gay, in fact I've always thought he was the pimp of pimps pimp2, lol. I am a little biased, but think his ability to portray (be?) all of the above AS A STRAIGHT BLACK MAN IN AMERICA is what makes his career so special. Thats really where the David Bowie comparisons become laughable to me. I'm a straight black American man fro (da dadadaaa!) and let me tell you, as a group we may be the most deeply homophobic, prone to hypermasculine behavior group in western civilization. What? A brother in panties and heels? omfg no no no! In so many ways, Prince is the anti-black man, anti-mandingo, hard, big d*ck, badass, N***a that many Americans and people worldwide are prejudiced to think of us as...but he was STILL cool. He put forth a new black masculinity...a different way of being in many ways. Yet its rare to find brothers who will bad mouth Prince, and many if pressed will admit they're fans, if only because (like IceCube) he said " eye just don't give a F*ck". Damn, some sociology student should do a PhD on that one..

But anyone here's what troubles me about the JW affinity now. I respect religion for what it can do for people's lives but it'd be crushing to me if this one took away a teacher like Prince. I remember being younger (a teen) just starting to realize how much i admired this little dude. At one point i argued with some friend of mine who kept saying Prince was gay and I distinctly recall thinking to myself 'damn...what if Prince IS gay?!?' and when i realized that i wouldn't admire him any differently, I knew he'd helped me learn lessons waaay beyond the 2 and 4.
