Did Homosexuality Factor Into Princes Fame?

Prince has been known for adding good to make up for bad.

Consider how Prince's Image is becoming just the opposite of the image that made him famous.

He has been quoted saying that Wendy and Lisa should appologize for their Lifestyles.

He has toned down his Flamboyant dressing/ make-up.
No Heals could be next sad

No longer uses profanity.

Does not care about being the Prince that made him so much money and fame. Even though he probably uses that money and fame to keep himself in a Rich Lifestyle.

Will Prince ever be able to escape from his Past Image?

Has he ever apologized for his previous (Pervious) lifestyle?

How well off would Prince be today without Homosexuality?

I'm not saying he is Gay or ever Was,
Its the Image he used to have which is still making him money.

In my opinion, Prince's image never said to me he was gay or bisexual. It screamed FREAK to me. Since I was a freak then, and a freak now, I was drawn to him. I always thought P had a feminine side or was very in tune with it, but I never thought for a second about him being anything other than straight. As far as the quote, I don't believe anything unless I hear it from the horse's mouth. As far as everything else, Prince has changed and grown up. Had he still been running around in a purple trenchcoat or legwarmers and bikini underwear, I would be laughing my ass off at him.

He put an image in my head of him screwing a Hot Transvestite with Uptown. And the keyboard solo in the song Head is so much like the stimulation and action you experience while performing oral sex "Head" on a Man~

It surprises me how many people miss that...

It used 2 B Anything Goes~

And don't leave out Homo-Sexuality~

The feminine touch sure had/has it's appeal. Not that I find Prince a turn-on, but his image, lyrics, music were non conformistic and daring. It would indeed be a bit silly to see prince in bikini again, but turning into a conservative preacher doesn't do it for me. I love the old Prince and like the new prince for his music, but he's no longer a symbol of challenging the norm.

His excellent musicianship and being norm-challenging in the way he tries to run his own affairs still makes him someone to watch out for.

Prince losing the heels would be tragic.

That's him. It's his individualistic thing. It's not a sin. It's just a thing he and only he can get away with and be iconoclastic, ultra unique.

I always just nod my head disbelief when I think about Larry and his influence on him.

Like they changing him to be one of them, stripping his persona, his personality. Making him normal. And the music will follow.

Hope, I reeeally hope that's not the road pray .

Sure, we're not expecting him to be Dirty Mind-ish again or Gett Off-ish with cheeks exposed, or licking guitars or mics, but just continue who he is. Prince. The Super Funky golden boy!

If he throws away the heels, then he might as well have not fought WB over the masters. He might as well close up Paisley Park.

Look at the cover of Dirty Mind...
Listen to 'If I Was Your Girlfriend'..
How can anyone deny that homosexuality had a part in his image/music?
You could say that their was no homosexuality in Hollywood films of the 20s-50s but there was, it was hinted at and gestured at but it was never directly acknowledged. We can look back now and see it clearly.

I don't see homosexual in either of those things personally.

I think the audience can attribute homoerotic overtones to those things though.

I think Prince used androgyny in his image, and still does to an extent, he should have been a spokesperson for Max Factor.

Of course today androgyny is not cool, it's not "in" - in the early/mid 80s it was, and Prince locked straight into that.

You don't often see Black men in the media looking the way Prince did - it was one of the things that drew me to Prince, his image, and the message of freedom in his music.

I don't consider androgyny to be homosexual.

Right. I have to answer NO, homosexuality did NOT factor into Prince's music fame. It was an androgynous play, and I agree Romance1600, androgyny is NOT gayness.

I think it's a way to relate to women without being gay. I remember reading somewhere as Prince was analysed in a book, way back, that Prince loves women so much, that he wants to be one,but not in a gay manner. His hairstyles reflect that observation. He wants to appeal to them.

Plus all the androgynous styles he's had was all about the Funk. So jocks and homophobes are ignorant to it and hate him.

But, what I really think they hated him was because he had guts to do that stuff AND because he got the ladies!

Well yes exactly, if you wanted to be a woman, that wouldn't make you gaym it would make you a transsexual.

I know it's an ongoing joke here, the "Prince is Gay" thread, but there's more cause to do the "Prince is Transsexual" thread in all honesty.

All except the last question could be attributed to the fact that Prince - like ordinary humans - ages and matures. He wil be 50 is few years. As pretty as he has always been, do yuo think that he could still be wearing makeup and assless pants? At some point, you move on. Stars that try to stay the same as they were when they hit it big are pitiful cariactures of themselves that get laughed at in their old school Las Vegas revue gigs. Prince is too good and too smart to let that ever happen. His spirituality probably has more to do with any changes than homosexuality or sex issues. But then, in America, we make everything come down to sex even when it doesnt

Prince's lyrics were never homosexual. They were always very heterosexual.

Anyone who knew the music knew what Prince was about.

I disagree. If he was actually gay, he'd be even more fucked up! Back then (In his glory days) homosexuality wasn't as "accepted" as it is now. People (especially the press) would have possibly ridiculed him as they did MJ, or probably worse. Why put him through that? He probably wouldn't have had as much good popularity, and his somewhat"sexy" image wouldn't have been regarded to as "sexy" by some people.

Maybe 2 Clear This Up A Little...

I'm saying that through the 80s and 90s A Clear Percentage Of the General Public thought that Prince was Gay Because Of His Image Of High Voice, High Heals, Lace Clothing, Heavy Make-up etc...
When Joan Rivers hosted the Tonight Show back in the day she was interviewing Vanity. She asked Vanity if Prince was Gay? Vanity imediately said NO! Definately NOT!
Joan Replied Back : OH PLEASE!!! HE MAKES MICHAEL JACKSON LOOK LIKE A GREEN BARET!!! The Audience Roars!!!

Prince Screamed Very Tallented FAG back then~

So Lets Watch And Listen Because He Might Do Or Say Something Controversial~ The There Came A Time When The General Public Lost Interest.

Prince Used That Image To Draw People Into The Music. And It worked. At The Cost Of A Lot Of People Thinking He Really Is A Fag.

Those People Are Wrong For Thinking That Way But That Is Reality Folks.

Prince Is Still Making Money From Those Days. And At the Same Time Preaching Against Those Images. And Ways...

Who Cares? I am Just Pointing Out That Homoerotic Behavior Did Factor Into Princes Fame. Not completely but it certainly did and probably always will. No matter how much he changes.

Homoerotic Lyrics:

Uptown- Girl Shes Just A "MAN", U Know? She Even Made Love 2 Me, Best Thing I Ever Had, I Never Talk 2 Strangers But This Time Its Alright. She Got Me Hot, I could'nt Stop, Good Times were Rollin All Night, All Night, Yeh~
Everybody Drag, Its All About Being Free!

Head - As Far As I Knew Was a term for Sucking Dick~

Jack U Off - Physical Action Done 2 Dick~

These were controversial songs because these were terms that were commonly used discribing sexual deeds done 2 Dick~

How Famous Did Prince Get For These Lyrics? How many people were first introduced to Prince with this music?

Not ONCE did I ever get the impression Prince was gay through his lyrics or image.

Maybe the general media/public had a different opinion, but to me, Prince has always been (until very recently) an open-minded straight guy, and nothing more/less.

Sueme

Why did he have Morris call him a "long-haired faggot" in Purple Rain?

I think it was all an act to appeal to as broad a fanbase as possible.

He could bring blacks, whites, gays, and straights into his fanbase by doing little things to appeal to each group.
