SmallClub.
i mean,is there really any contest?

it is raw,...full show,& flawless.
whereas ONAlive! is great, but some overdubs & also being edited from different gigs,it loses points.
SmallClub: 1,000/10
ONALive! : 8/10

ONA Live. Small Club has some great moments but as a whole, I think it's overrated. The playing on ONA is funkier and more accomplished. (compare that pretty darn lame version of Cold Sweat to the live Xenophobia and hear how much P has grown)

I'll have to say Small Club because I still haven't listened to ONA Live, even though I've had it since release.

Still, I have a feeling I'd still be saying Small Club, even if I flipped ONA out of it's box right now and listened to it.

Small Club.

Because ONA Live became boring after 5 times listening and Small Club after 6 times. So easy... lol

Small club has got to be one of the best recordings of live music ever by any artist. Thank God someone had a tape recorder with them that night, otherwise we would never of heard of People Without.

The jam at the start headbang
Still would stand all time headbang
Forever in my life music
People without headbang
and best of all RAVE R.A.V.E RAVE, EVERYBOSY SINGING IT ON THE 1 headbang

ONA Live. Nothing on Small Club except RUTJF comes close to The Everlasting Now, or Dorothy Parker, or Joy in Repetition, or Xenophobia...etc., etc...

SMALL CLUB IS BETTER FOR MANY REASONS.I WILL NOT LIST ALL BECAUSE I'M VERY LAZY,BUT ONE THING I LOVE IS WHEN I GET TO HEAR A COMPLETE SHOW.I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF THE MULTIPLE TAPINGS.I LIKE THE FEEL OF ONE SHOW IN ITS ENTIRETY.

ALSO,SMALL CLUB IS ONE OF THE BEST LIVE RECORDINGS IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC.IT REALLY IS.I LISTEN TO A LOT OF LIVE STUFF AND IT RANKS AS ONE OF THE BEST EVER.IF IT WERE AVAILABLE FOR CRITICAL REVIEW I KNOW MY OPINION WOULD BE MATCHED WITH OTHERS.

I STILL AM BLOWN AWAY BY THE SOUND QUALITY AND THE MIX.WHOEVER WAS MANNING THE SOUND BOARD IS AWESOME!!

this is gonna be tough,
i like both of them. ONa IS MORE spiritual, jazzy, and up-to
date. i dig the ONA band a bunch.

now as to SMALL club...i don't know how to explain it...but
the energy and fun in this performance is hard to beat.
(handclaps U might be right about it being overrated...but
as far as Live shows by P its UP there in 5 star category.

so i'll pick it over ONA .

(for anyone who has any of the 81 or 82 Houston shows on
video...these are pretty DAMN good too. and if U have the
NEW york Ritz shows circa 1981...these are HOt.)

they're as good as ONA!

Small Club is overrated and ONA Live is underrated.

Small Club is cool: a superfunkeeah D.M.S.R., the
brilliance of Just My Imagination (voice, strings,
guitarsolo), the mesmerizing People Without,...
etc.

BUT i prefer ONA Live, it's simply great. And 2
much Prince fans underappreciate this glorious box,
really music

I love them both.

Only problem with small club is that I lost the first half of it. Backed my MP3's to CD due to hard drive problems, had 8 CD's and when I went to transfer them back, one disk had errrors on it. The only affected file? Small club part 1!!!
RIP sad

I have'nt listened to small club for some time and have just played it twice.

I have been into P for about 18 years, seen a lot of gigs and heard a lot of boots and I don't think anything compares to this. Sure, a lot comes very close but I think on this night the band clicked and everyone was on top of their game.

Princes voice seems to have a rawness rarely heard which gives the show a very different atmosphere to anything I've heard by him over the years. His guitar playing is awesome, especially rave and just my imagination.

Boni's voice is fantastic and sounds great leading the band.

Miko's guitar playing is funky as hell throughout.

I don't think you can compare them. ONA Live shows Prince's maturity and musicianship. The band is tight, everything is groovy. It's evolution.

Small Club is Prince at the height of his badness and creativity back in '88. The show is so improvised it's ridiculous. If you listen to all the aftershows in the weeks before and after this one, he never performs the song the same way twice. The versions of Just My Imagination and his own "People Without" were so raw and spontaneous. Not to mention being able to hear the early mutations of Still Would Stand All Time and the best version of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic ever heard. Bonnie Boyer on Down Home Blues, and Cold Sweat,I'll take you there.
Points in time. Both beautiful experiences.
