What if Prince was gone?

IN the wake of Barry White's death and Luther Vandross' altered state, I thought to myself: "What if somethig happened to Prince like that?"

There would be this huge hole in music. It would not be like the ridiculous and unmerited overkill of Tupac or Alliyah - who had not done anything great enough to deserve that kind of respect. (They core audience IS ghetto is that explains it, I suppose).

I would cry and miss him dearly. Like I did when Miles passed. I wonder if the record industry would pick his bones as they do with other legends like Miles and Hendrix by releasing a load of old unreleased stuff or even remasters.

Of course it would be a sad time for us all, not to mention the music industry.
I think it's obvious that sooner or later the money making wheels of the music industry will realise the wealth of unreleased material (the late) Prince has to offer.
Even now, there is always a new bootleg coming out - and that fact that they are getting more sophiscated in quality and presentation goes to show that even with Prince alive and releasing muisc, there will always be a profitable market in his unreleased material.
I only wish Prince himself would realise this so he himself can enjoy the money to be made from his Vault, rather then the bootleggers!

Anyway, let's just enjoy him alive!

When Prince dies, I can't even imagine what that's gonna do to folk.

I mean for the general public it will just be another aging (when he does pass) popstar from the past who's gone - there will be the best of's, the TV programs, the magazine articles yadda, yadda.

But I know I will take it more personally than any other music artist I like, I've grown up with Prince. His music was really the soundtrack to my adolescence, the stuff on Controversy, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy, D&P, Dirty Mind, PR, it really shaped my ideology as a teenager.

I'm not sure how I will react, I think I'll play whatever Prince songs I'm feeling at that moment loud enough to wake the neighbourhood.

I hope you are joking about Pac and about his core audience being ghetto. I am a huge fan of Pac, thug mentality and all. Aaliyah may not be worthy of respect to you, but there are people who loved and miss her dearly. Must you put others down to raise P up? There are gonna be people who couldn't give a damn when P passes away, just as you are so blaise about the folks you mention.

Tupac was a thug but I made no comment about that. I said that he did not deserve the respect that he gets in death. I didnt put him down. Thats your fabrication. I dont care who loves or misses either of them though I did acknowledge the fact that there are mony that do. Make it into a argument if you want - thats my opinion.

Prince would be a greater loss on an artistic and cultural basis

This is precisely my point. If you have followed his carer, he has been in your life for over 20 years. There is a wealth of material in the back log. He pioneered a part of popular music history. He should be greatly missed.

Hey Guys...he's not dead yet!

Let's just moan about the fact that we have to give our money to the bootleggers rather then Prince himself for the unreleased music we know and love!

The bootleggers have a lot to be thanked for. They've released stuff Prince didn't - as a collector, I thank them for that very sincerely.

I know songs are tagged and edited/changed purposely, there is a lot of crap attached to the Prince-fanbase because of how he works (see the Secret Society thread), but without bootleggers, we would have some great, great songs.

If it was official, I would buy it, but he ain't releasing it, so it's his loss, it doesn't take money away from Prince since the only people who buy bootlegs are die-hards, and they have and buy everything official any way.

If anything he's shooting himself in the foot.

I would be a little sad and disappointed that all the interesting things the man does would stop

But obviously he's hip to the next chapter so I don't worry about him much. I'm just glad he keeps on spewing out the volumes while he's still here

I think you'll find the core audience isn't 'the ghetto'.

I think he meant "ghetto" the adjective. Which doesn't always have anything at all to do with living "in the ghetto."

The funny thing about this is, I was asked the same question when Aaliyah died. My best friend was a huge Aaliyah fan, and when the news of her death came on TV, I was sleeping and he woke me up very upset. I was a little blase about it; I mean, come on, I was sleeping and the chick ain't related to me. But he was a little offended and said, "What if it was Prince? You wouldn't be shrugging it off then; you'd be a mess!"

I thought about it, and I really don't think I would be. Prince's music is an enormous part of my life, and I can't imagine my life without it. But the thing is, I'll always have that. If Prince died tomorrow, his amazing wealth of material would still be there.

And that's what matters most to me. I don't know Prince. So I would mourn the passing of a truly great musician who has given me immeasurable joy, but I don't think I'd be making hysterical pilgrimages to Paisley or anything.

Now, if my P CD collection died, that's another story. Bitch'd be on a rampage.

Turn your heads to the east
I'll be coming from the west
Ain't no stoppin' me baby
'Cause I'm the best
Cry, cry, cry
I love it when you moan
This funk will cut so deep
Gonna touch your soul
My funk is multilayered
Don't stop me now
I got a fever pumpin'
Don't stop me now
I'll make love to you
I got a warehouse full of protection, 2 times
Good lord
I wanna be your busy bee
I'll be your busy bee
Come on queen...

woot! I love this part! Very sample-heavy, but funky as hell!
