I just have a few questions, 4 y'all right quick. I've been curious 2 know. Okay in ur honest opinon what made Lovesexy so great as album? What made it so different then all other Prince album?? And at what Point did u realize Lovesexy was had a splash of spiritual undertones? Was from all the reviews u read or the actually lyrics in the song???

Can u emphasize 4 a sista please batting eyes

At the time there was a lot of talk of the album being a drug metaphor. No one really
bothered too much to look deep. The live show really made people see the real message.

It was the last of the totally different
sounding lps down the line since '78.
A truly classic era.

I remembering buying the album for the first time, it was late late in the 90's afte all the countroversy... I didni't really get in2 at first, but after a fan explained 2 me the whole concept of lovesexy I kinda dug it. I abosutely fell in love with Anna Stesia ... me and my sis use 2 sing it all the time (she was like 10) lol

I bought lovesexy when it was kinda old... and I remember thinking fur some reason I don't remember this album by or the single released from it Alphabet street, but the one thing I do remember is, how underground it sound and that was the thing I liked about it... Anna Stesia is one of my fav songs too

i havent properly listened to it yet. i mean i love it, but not the same way i love pruple rain, TRC or ONA live. my first peoblem is that its one phat song so i cant skip any songs. (im too lazy to hold down fastforward)
i adore anna stesia, but i heard the ONA live verion first and cant get into the one on lovesexy.

so in truth at the moment i dont think its that great, but i guess its a little unfair for me to judge it when i have only listened to it fully about once.

the album is WAY ovr produced. I also think he should've programmed the dumz on the Linn. i'm not sure if he uses something different of it's Shelia E but the drums are whack (except for Alphabet St).

if you took the songs and arranged them in a more minimal fashion it would've been his best album IMO. but the overproduced sheen the album has justs makes it unlistenable.

I think that's what he wanted to do. Not OVERproduce it, but have much more layers and voices and just more going on than on his previous albums.
It's not my favorite one, but I think the sound fits the "awakening" it surely meant for Prince.

I'll never forget being in london at the time and seeing Alphabet Strret video on the one (of 3) stations they had in '88.

I'm trying to like this one but I just can't get into its idea! Why did he release LoveSexy in the 1st place? What is he trying to prove? And did he gian from releasing that LP?

Yes, indeed the Alphabet St. video did propel its success but at that point, P's popularity had kinda diminished. Or at least it was limited to the dedicated fans (like us or like Pearl Jam fans now). I would ask some friends about the Lovesexy album and that would be the one they don't know. But also at this time Prince was trying to be a true artist and not just "Pop Star". I don't think he was concerned about sales and stuff. He was more about the message.

I guess it's relative, because alongside the Gold Experience, I think it is his BEST produced record. There is SO much depth 2 it, and stuff 2 uncover, it's a total trip 2 listen 2.
It's the same with NIN's 'The Downward Spiral' - everytime I hear that I'm always pickjing out new sounds and little nuances. That's why I still dig it now.
It jsut desperatly needs remasterign - but let's not go there!

Lovesexy
May10, 1988

I was 3 weeks from graduating high school when this album was released. So the excitement from that situation was bleeding into a Prince release which in those days was a major event.
When the album was finally released it was anti-climatic,I did not like the album very well so Lovesexy was hidden in the collection while SOTT was still playing. After college started that fall I started to listen to it more .
I now understand the meaning of the album and I love to listen to it.

I have it ranked at # 6 in Prince's collection.

I had heard the album was being called spritual but that's not why I brought it. But once I did I loved it. I think Wish you heaven is so sweet. Sometimes when people get nasty with me I just say I wish you heaven. Of course they look at me like what? But they usually stop to think.

Overproduced? The drums are wack? Wow, I SOOO don't relate to some o' y'all.

Which is cool and all, just sayin'.

This album has to be the most intense expression of joy ever put to record.

Yeah me 2, When I first bougt Lovesexy I jus' hid it somewhere in the back of my Prince collection, but after a while I started listening to it, I started 2 feel the groove of the message. I always thought Lovesexy was like the introduction 2 Graffiti Bridge. For instants ...

Lovesexy was really the beginning of Prince expressing his spiritaul side, which is something he never really done besides the cross on Sign O' the times.

The black album was like Prince evil side. which he showed even though he could be a good boy, he was still fighting with some demons...

Then later on Graffiti Bridge came and it was like saying, after all is lost and all is done everything will be alright... and when I find peace I will meet you underneath the Graffiti Bridge. You see it was all like one story put 2gether

So with the interuptation, this is what really made me 2 see it in a different light

it is overproduced,it sounds too cartoonish in parts.

it took me more than a year 2 finally just put it on,letitgo & soak it in. (thanx 2 funkystrange who xplained 2 me the musical genius of it)

i only liked Lovesexy,Alphabet st & Annastesia at 1st.
now i can listen 2 it all the way thru.

GlamSlam & DanceOn r perhaps,musically,the most incredible & amazing songs 2 listen 2.
GlamSlam's guitars,,,& those synths at the end of GlamSlam leading in2 AnnaStesia r sooo kooky
& just fuckin wild!
Dance On's percussion bursts, lyrics like: "nuclear band never stays in tune...they all know the words but the music is doomed.../... bass guitar in spider webs, longing 4 the funk"
clapping
i mean WHO else could come up with this shit?

Positivity & eye No are perhaps the only 2 trax i dont get in2 as much.
those 2 trax r like the crust in a loaf of bread... everything else in between is yummy & ...
ok ive run out of word 2 describe it... (i have a hangover, leave me alone! lol )
but u know what i mean.

Lovesexy is definately in my top5 Prince albums.
i wish it was remastered tho,or perhaps i should pick it up in vinyl...
& yeah the drums, especially on AnnaStesia r just a bit slack sounding.

live version i love the best is either Sendai 89 (btw... is this guitar solo after the 1st chorus not played live?... i know this sounds wack,
but listening 2 that & then the studio track & i cant hear any difference at all! please clear this up 4 me cuz the thought he didnt play the 'anna stesia' guitar solo live is annoying me)
another great live version is NYC 2002.

for me the ONA live one is just so powerful. the piano, his singing. its strong and passionate, everytime when he says "LA. clap your hands" i get chills.

i hard the "real" one second and IMO it just doesnt have that drive, his singing is quiet and i can hardly hear it and it doesnt sound as natural, too synthesised.

but before you kill me i am listening to it now and i do love it and i know the more i listen to the lovesexy version the more i will love it.

but live music does it for me.

I have to admit that Lovesexy wasn't an immediate hit with
me. i bought it the day it came out, and after the brilliance
of Sign O' The Times, and the quirky funkyness of The Black
Album, I remember being a bit disappointed at first, though
I love it now .

I still don't think it's a 'perfect' album though. I still
can't stand the horrible cheap drum sound on Positivity
(it ruins the song for me). It wasn't until Mavis Staples
covered it on one of her albums that I acually appreciated
it, it worked so much better with the more 'tribal' drum
rhythm in my opinion. The other weak point on the album is
Eye No, I always feel like there's something missing on this
track, but I can never put my finger on exactly what it is.
I've always liked the title track though, it's a pity it
never got released as a single as was intended.

I'd be intrigued to hear what the 'New Master' version of
this album sounds like.
