Fuck! I'm going to bring up Under The Cherry Moon again

Watched this for the first time in years and it's funny, entertaining and has got a style to it. Prince plays the comic scenes with ease, but OK some of the posing is a bit embarrassing.

And I want to meet Kristen Scott Thomas so I can ask her what it was like having Prince slobbering all over her.

Favourite quote from the movie:
"Hey Isaac, stroke her a couple of times for me cuzzin, and shove a pillow up her ass, she like dat!"

(Prince staggers off to his car like a poofter, jumps into the car and catches his heels on the front door, narrowly escaping falling flat onto his face!)

Up her ass?? I always thought it was "under her ass". Hey, maybe that's what he means by "Under the Cherry Moon!" wink

Movie's not that bad. It takes itself too seriously at the
end and it did not need to be in B&W.

I love that whole scene - when he spots the car and stamps his foot and staggers over to it - god, I used to watch this film all the time...

It is in Black and White because it is a FILM ( artistic and shit) not a MOVIE. Yeah and Ms. Kristin needs to thank the man for putting her in the "film",her first for the states if not her first period.

i love this movie. the public expected another purple rain and instead prince gave them a parody of all those old 40's films. yeah, it is corny at times but so were they. i always thought it was supposed to be over the top. whichever the case, i watch this movie at least once a year...usually when i'm sick and don't feel like dealing with the world outside.

It was her first film. Kristin Scott Thomas has no need to thank Prince - she has expressed her gratitude in public to Prince as recently as this year.

I love that movie, just because it's silly. It was silly then, but in a good way.

I always loved the opening when Prince is playng piano, seducing Mrs. Wellington and Jerome is sending over the little notes on the napkins.

"How much money you make a week?"
"--- francs"
"--- francs, couldn't you buy some cologne?"

After I saw that I wanted to go to "L'acote d'azur" and find my own Christopher.

I think people took it far too seriously and thus panned it when it was released. It obviuosly has soe parody elements for the film genre that it reflects with the black and white and exotic setting. Prince is hilarious - funnier than Morris Day ever was. The music actually works better than Purple Rain. Purple Rain made space for the performances of the music - UCTM worked the msuci into the scenes and plot but you dont loose them behind the images oon the screen. Watch the ALexa de Paris scene with Chris and Mary dancing on the deck of the ship and you will see what I mean. I always liked UTCM and always will

People took the film far too seriously? They didn't take it seriously at all!!. Most critics, and audience-goers (and there weren't that many!) realised full well that the film was attempting to be a light-hearted comedy, spiced with some melodrama and genre parody. Even armed with this basic knowledge and judging the film against such expectations, ultimately the attempt failed.

Sure, for the fan of Prince's music, there is interest, and it can be entertaining to watch him play out the charismatic gigolo on screen, quirks and all. However, the characters are neither particularly attractive nor interestingly developed. The central plot is weak and dull. The script is ordinary and shallow, and the cast struggle to bring it sufficiently alive.

The same could be said of many of Elvis's movies and he made terrible movie after terrible movie. Prince could have had a wonderfully trashy film career much like the films of Elvis. He had such potential.

In 86 when this movie was released they said that it was only topped by Plan 9 from Outer Space as the worst movie of all time. After seeing the movie I realized that is was OK.A lot better than HOWARD the DUCK which was released the same summer.

The movie is a total dud. Horrible. It looks totally ridiculous sitting next to the Seventh Seal, Citizen Kane and L'avventura on my shelf. I LOVE IT!

Well thats not my point which could be easily missed with so much psuedo intellectual pontification. The term "seriously" does refer to the fact that it was recognized as a comedy and STILL criticized like a straight drama. It was funny and offbeat. It was unique in many ways. And like some of Prince's early work, it was over the top. Was it Oscar worthy? THe plot is no weaker than plenty of comedies that get wide release and never get bagged the way that UCTM did. Coming off Purple Rain, it was difficult to follow up with something that wasnt as strong. But the, was the plot, characters, and acting that much better in Purple Rain? With the exception of Clarence Williams, there were no real experienced actors so you cant say there were great performances.

My comments about the music had nothong to do with a bias for the tunes themselves or being a fan of the music (even though Kiss was a hit) but the way in which they were used as opposed to the way they were used in Purple Rain.
