When & What Was Yo 1st Reaction When You Heard "Power Fantastic" 4 The 1st Time?

It was only 3 years ago when I start digging Prince's stuff. I bought the Hits/B-Side and after I played the b-side cd, I heard this bass-free number with haunting feel all over it, Melancholy flute & mute trumpet, powerful piano pre4mance and moody vocals. I shed some tears the 1st time I heard it even tho I didn't know what exactly does it mean and I had serious shivers for 3 days. That is by far one of my ultimate Prince pre4mances, hope he pre4m it once in a while.

Ur turn!

Loved it! Can't remember when the first time was though, I have this vague memory of hearing before I purchased Hits/B-Sides. When I'm doing my warm up exercises I like to hear it, there's something very graceful about it to me.

I think it was back in the late Eighties when I got my 1st boot CD: 'Crucial'. Back then it was being touted as one of the infamous Prince/Miles recordings.
Regardless of that, it's an amazing piece that really captures a 'moment'

When I first heard it I was a fool, and only like Prince's upbeat funk stuff, so I hated it.

That's all changed though. This piece is haunting. It almost always goes onto my jazz compilations, if I'm making one. It's beautiful

The first time I heard it was off a bootleg tape that my friend Emilio (Yellow Smiley) gave me around 1991 or so. One side was Crystal Ball, the other was the Black Album. I played that tape and heard the song and really hated it. Didn't like it at all.

Fast forward about 8 years. I was living on my own and had recently gotten a hold of Crystal Ball (Bootleg version) on CD. I was cleaning my apartment and CB was playing in the background. Power Fantastic came on and it hit me like a ton of bricks. As I was scrubbing my sink I couldn't help but be drawn in by the song. I replayed it probably about 10 times in a row just amazed that I had written this song off so many years ago. I cried. I still do.

This is now one of my most favorite Prince songs ever! I guess i just wasn't ready for it when it came the first time and thankfully my musical taste has increased to encompass so many musical styles and genres.

This song is just brilliant and amazing in its simplicity. It is one of Prince's most beautiful vocal performances. I simply cannot even say enough about this song.

And I agree, this song is haunting. It gives me the chills every time....

I love that track 2. It was recorded live in one take and Prince only came up with the intro just before the tape rolled.
He played it at the soundcheck at Avery Fisher in New York last year and thats a cool version.

And I love that Lisa was upstairs in a separate room from the rest of the band which was downstairs...

You're lucky, imagine that you cleaned you collection's closet and threw that bootleg away? Wow that was really a good story nod

I was hoping so something along these lines when Prince release ONA through NPGMC. There were some good songs on that CD but lots of them felt to similar. Prince really is amazing on Piano tracks like this...

Actually, I think it is a bit boring. Musically ok, with a bit of a new age lilt. A lazy song, for meloncholy days. Better funeral music.

"what's that shit? mmm, it's okay, better skip back to HELLO and IRRISITIBLE BITCH..." LOL

to be honest, i don't really care about that song. nice inclusion on the set, but i could live without it. i was really overwhelmed by all the new b-sides i first listened to when i finally found the set for a cheap price in a local second-hand-shop wink must have been some months ago.

The very first time I listened to it I didn't REALLY listen to it. I sort of just put it on and let it play...I was probably eating lunch at the time with my family. I always had this habit of playing music while I eat. (Don't know why! lol )

Anyway, by the time I'd finished lunch I went over to the stereo. "For The Tears In Your Eyes" had just finished playing, and all of a sudden - "Late at night..."

omg I was floored! At first I kept waiting for the song to let me down, to disappoint me in some way. I couldn't believe it was tickling my aural g-spot in that way! lol

Sure enough, I fell in love...I had the song on repeat ever since then! wink

I must say, I thought it was quite dull. I still think that. In fact, the B-sides was quite disappointing, there were lots of other great bsides that weren't included. Also when you hear them all together... you realise what weak tracks they are.

I did exactly the same. A friend gave me a whole pile of bootlegs she had and this one on it. It really is Fantastic. I am quite speachless about it!!

Spring 1992 on a "CB" bootleg with an average sound, my reaction was "wow and it's still unreleased!?"

1995, when I first bought The Hits/B-Sides. Gave me chills. Still does.

And, Ian: Weak tracks? The B-Sides is still one of my favorite CDs! Erotic City, How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore, 17 Days, She's Always In My Hair...find a weak track there!
