Its obvious with this effortless release.. Prince is cooped up in his paranoid world of butt squinching too afraid to releasing anything of value to even his collective club for fear of his so called resistors, his banished ones, the file sharing world that wouldn't bother paying good money for the "fluff" he is releasing these days.
I listen to alot of good fusion jazz and this is just below par material and its laughable at the notion that this is a new direction in music. "East" as Papabeat said is not bad, its GREAT and I think that if the other 3 tracks were on the same level, he'd have something interesting aside from alot of beautiful horns.

that's a fantastic moment... and i wait, i wait, i wait... peace Well, the packaging is awkward and gimmicky. And if you put the CD in your CDROM drive on your PC you get a silly barely-working flash animation that you have to close every time. And when you finally get to the music, it's pretty dull really. Call me mad, call me a philistine, but I'm not really digging NEWS. Has some good musical moments, but I'd appreciate those moments a bit more if they were in the middle of an actual song...

There are some nice transitions in there. Take West at the 8.30 mark for an example. Maybe not LCBSN/GAB, but then again LCBSN/GAB isn't West either. And thank God it's not West! I played N.E.W.S. to an older friend of mine, and he blew it off with comments such as 'so and so did that before', 'it's derivitive', 'nothing new there'. Well, maybe so, but I'm the lucky one who is now enjoying the new album .
Great, except that Prince called it 'new directions in music,' and your friend was able to find it derivative, hence, NOT NEW. That said, I'm glad that because of N.E.W.S. you have been exposed to a genre of music that otherwise you wouldn't have heard. But your friend said so-and-so did it first - buy so-and-so's cd and learn about the history of music instead of getting all your learning from Prince. But of course, he abandons it and takes the song somewhere else. True, and I'm glad he did. I'd rather have a 14 minute song with lots of changes and interesting parts than 14 minutes sounding like the intro.I never said he had to use the intro through the entire record. The intro is what creates the mood for the record - that guitar solo in "Doves," the pipe in "ATWIAD," prepares us for the journey we are about to take. "East" doesn't prepare us for anything, and then doesn't go anywhere anyway.

I feel like it goes somewhere; I guess that we all appreciate music differently. I do love all those classic Prince moments that you talked about, and now I'm gonna put on When Doves Cry to get my fix...Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

My thoughts:
It doesn't really get started until halfway through East, although I like the piano in the latter half of North. Up until the 2nd half of East, I was getting too many unpleasant flashbacks to Kamasutra I was *very* indifferent to South, it didn't do anything for me, but it was better than North. West was probably my favourite since I saw it as the most active track, although that might change after repeated listens, I often go for the less obvious tracks once I get to know something. For example I love the less obvious tracks by Madhouse like Fourteen for example. As it is now, I can't see NEWS becoming as listened to as Xpectation, apart from maybe West. It certainly isn't a "new direction" for Prince, he has done this before, and much better. The one constant I did enjoy throughout was Eric Leeds, his contribution was most welcome and lifted most of the tracks from being dull as dishwater to listenable. Oh well, I wonder where he'll go next. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a sucker for a major chord
