Question about Prince Fans

DO the majority of the bigtime fans prefer revolution-era stuff over NPG-era stuff or vice versa? Just curious as I only know most of his "hit" songs but I'm more partial to his stuff from 79-86. "mountains" is one of my favorite songs.

I like Prince and each band / era has added something different.

I still really like his old stuff but I prefer spending time getting to know his new stuff.
BTW, if you haven't heard it, the extended version of Mountains kicks ass!

I never look at it as "band eras", as most of Princes best songs have been solo.

I take each track on its own merit.

However, I think the 85-88 period produced the best material by far.

If you're comparing bands, The Revolution doesn't count for 79-86 since they were only really credited on three albums during that period, PR, Parade, and ATWIAD.

IMO, various incarnations of the NPG have had better musicians than the Revolution, but the Revolution had some obviously classic stuff. Overall, I gotta agree with Squirellmeat that most of Prince's best work has been solo.

Me personally, I prefer the NPG by a long shot. I got into Prince in the 80s, so I'm not some kid who has just picked up a Prince CD, but I honestly prefer the NPG stuff over the Revolution. Or at least, I prefer "post-Revolution" to the Revolution. Sign O The Times, Lovesexy, Exodus, Emancipation, The Rainbow Children... as much as I love the Revolution albums, I prefer the other stuff. And the NPG are / were great live - especially 95 NPG.

The Revolution,, closely followed by the SOTT and Lovesexy bands.

Whilst they may not have been the greatest musicians, he was obviously inspired by their diversity, and his music reflected that at the time.

i think wendy and lisa had a giant impact on the music and there has been no band like the revolution since its disbanding. for a long while after that band broke, it seemed like prince was not interested in what his other bandmembers could bring to the table. they were just bodies to play instruments in music he wrote. now, with the past few recordings since rainbow children, we see some musical influence (from outside of prince) creeping into the sound. its really refreshing. lovesexy and sott are great albums, but a lot of p's solo work is kind of like musical masturbation. i love it, but i love this current incarnation of the npg (and the revolution) more.

I wouldn't trade the three Revolution albums for everything Prince did solo.
