19 year! Makes me feel old!

Now that I've had 19 years to digest it...

Best Track: The Beautiful Ones

Worst Track: Take me with U

Hidden Gem: Computer Blue.

19 years ago I would have said:

Best track: When Doves Cry

Worst Track: Purple Rain

Hidden Gem: Darling Nikki

So will my views change in another 19!?

19???
Oh my my...
This was the first Prince album I ever listened to... but at that time I didn't like it, my sister did and she was the one buying it. I was 9 years old and I was still buying things like Spandau Ballet. wink
Now I love it, it brings back so many memories. smile

***Best track: "When Doves Cry"

***Least Favorite Track: "Take Me With U"

***Hidden Gem: "Computer Blue

***If you could change one thing about this album, what would it be: Remove the song "Take Me With U" and keep the long version of "Computer Blue" intact. At an early stage,"Take Me With U" was slated to appear on the Apollonia 6 album (as the first single) and I think their album could have really used it anyway.

***Were you satisfied with the single releases? I would have chosen "The Beautiful Ones" as the fifth and final single, instead of "Take Me With U".

Let's see your responses...

i love Take Me with U
but that just my humble opinion.
i think Purple Rain was the perfect album
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Best Track: "The Beautiful Ones"... perpetually tied with "Erotic City" as my favorite P song.

Worst Track: If there need be one, I'd say "Purple Rain" itself, though that denoueument is still as gorgeous as anything P ever came up with.

Hidden Gem: "Baby I'm a Star." Literally. Because of the direct segue, I spent years assuming "I Would Die 4 U" lasted eight or so minutes and went directly to "Purple Rain."

And, for the record, I'm in the club that regards "Take Me With U" as one of Prince's most underrated classics.

I'm listening to this album now, to commemmorate its birthday. I'm reaching the end - the guitar solo of Purple Rain - and I'm remembering what a great album this is. I rarely listen to the whole album - I have all 36 hours of the officially released material on my computer, hooked up to my stereo, and play it randomly, so it has to be a conscious decision to listen to a full Prince album in order.

But this is some serious stuff. Great music.

To paraphrase Sonny T, "just 'cause it's commercial don't mean it's bad."

I wish it was 19 years ago !

Damn time flies when you are having fun!

My second favorite album of any artist.

The GREATEST album of the 80's period !

Let's Go Crazy was the theme song of the 80's.

When Doves Cry greatest song of 1984.

Best Soundtrack Oscar.

Best B-sides !

I could go on and on ...

I try to avoid this album at all cost. It is probably one of my least listened to albums. I am so tired of the songs on that album. They are all wonderful gems, but they are over and done for me.

What do you give a historic album like "Purple Rain" for its birthday? For years, my mom played a copy of the tape that my grandpa found in his resturant. I know, isn't that strange? This was maybe ten or so years ago. THat's how the love affair really got started, though I've heard his stuff on radio and MTV and seen "Purple Rain" before that, etc. But she would play the whole thing over and over while driving and it was amazing! And the song that stuck out for me was "Computer Blue" although I would say "The Beautiful Ones" is the best one (I didn't hear one bad song on there, note bad note!). I always loved that album but it took me a while to get his stuff. I think I just picked up "Hits 1" (which I gave to my mom) and it slowly began.

I always wished they would have released a second album with all the other songs by other artists from "Purple Rain" on there, even Prince's "God". Now that's a reissue! Imagine "Sex Shooter" finally on CD where it belongs!
