A ? TO THE XPERTS: RASPBERRY BERET/POP LIFE MIXES? hello, this is my "first" posting. maybe someone remembers me, i was a member maybe 2 years ago and posted under the name "aprilspearl". after quite a long pause listening to prince i again became infected by his music and started again to listen to it. okay, so much to me. here's the question:
i'm a bit confused about the RASPBERREY BERET 12" and its mixes of the title track and the b-side SHE'S ALWAYS IN MY HAIR. are there two different versions? i was looking for a comprehensive discography and found the brilliant site of Aprilsnow and checked the stuff. this is what i found: German 12" Raspberry Beret (Extented Remix 6:36) She's Always In My Hair (Extented Remix 6:29) Australian 12" Raspberry Beret (New Mix 6:36) She's Always In My Hair (New Mix 6:48 ) US 12" Raspberry Beret (New Mix 7:25) She's Always In My Hair (New Mix 6:48 ) so, are their different versions? i'm a bit confused because of the different timings. same thing with POP LIFE/HELLO HELLO also has two different timings, depending on which release: 6:29 or 6:38. maybe are these different just because of different mastering? and a final question: on the sleevographia site i found a picture of a 12" test pressing of SIGN 'O' THE TIMES (the single). anybody knows about these mixes: Sign "O" The Times (Bailey Edit 6:32) Sign "O" The Times (King/Lemon Re Edit 6:36)?

The version of She's always in my Hair on the US 12" of Raspberry Beret is more like an extended version. ie it's a longer version of the track with a lot of screaming I seem 2 remember. Raspberry Beret is the same version on all 12"s. Again it's longer with more of an intro and the coughing U see him do on the video.
As 4 Pop Life there are 2 versions of the 12". The British version is an extended ie longer version with an extra verse. The US copy has Sheila E's remix of the extended version. It has a lot of weird sort of phasing and sometimes sounds like it's been put through a flanger effects pedal! Welcome back 2 the org by the way

I can understand your confusion. The easiest way to look at it is to ignore all the timings.
With Raspberry Beret there are two versions. The standard single/album cut and the longer 6 min plus extended version. All the different timings quoted are misleading. With She's always in my hair, there are again only two versions, a long and a short, just look for versions based around the three and a half minute mark and the six and a half minute mark. Then you'll have both. With Pop Life, there are three. The single/album version, the full extended version (just over nine mins) and a Sheila E remix, which comes in about 6 odd mins. This version is often called the Fresh Remix). If you are looking at getting all the Around the World in a day extra material for the least cost, get these: 1. UK 12" release of Paisley Park. You get the extended version of Paisley and the short version of She's always in my hair. 2. US 12" of Raspberry Beret. This gets you the extended Raspberry and the extended Shes always in my hair. 3. US 12" Of Pop life. This gets you The Sheila E Fresh remix and the extended version of Hello. 4. UK 12" of Pop life. This gets the the full extended version of Pop life and the extended version of Girl. 5. US 12" of America. This gets the 21 min version of America. If you want to get EVERY bit from the era, you need one of the 7" singles with Hello on it, as its not an edit but actually a 7" mix. Also, get yourself the We are the world album, for the track "For the Tears In Your eyes". If you download them all, they make a great additional disc to complement the original album. I hope this helps. .

and also thanks to you. now i know i've got all the stuff i need. i already did a compilation with that songs, i think they're really awsome.
another question: is the version of "4 the tears in your eyes" on the "usa for africa"-album different than the one on "the hits" package?

Yes, it is different. The version on We Are The World, is poppier, faster and clearer. In my opinion, its far better, although many will prefer the other.
The version on The Hits is actually a live recording (with no audience) recorded at a stadium somewhere (I forget where). Its the same place the video was made. .
