Well DUH...if I wasn't addicted to Prince music I SURE wouldn't spend so much money on the guy!! And I sure wouldn't spend my time on this site.

I think Maark would prefer us to look towards Michael Jackson for our inspiration based on the content of his previous threads.I am confident that one day he will grow to appreciate music rather than the throwaway, bubblegum pop Jackson offers.

I really do thinks Prince does care about who buys his music. After all, this is his main way of making money, and, sadly, we all need money to survive.
As Nelson George once perfectly put it, back in the days of "Purple Rain" and such his ideas and style jived with pop culture. And now, his ideas and style don't 'jive' with pop culture, that's why he isn't such a huge commercial success. It's not that the music isn't good, it's that it doesn't have a very wide audience. He does care, but at the same time doesn't want to compromise himself and his music; which is something I've always admired about him. It's all a matter of taste, you either like what he's doing now or you don't, it's that simple.[/quote] I agree. Pop culture has changed significantly - although some of it is just a reinventing of old ground that Prince introduced. The "in your face" sexuality of artists such as Missy Elliott. Justin Timberlake trying to talk sexy through his songs..."Are you feeling me baby?" etc - but no one compares to Prince. For the most part, the artists are less creative, and I cannot imagine Prince ever coming out on stage with grubby baggy slacks hanging under his hips. I think any artist who is beyond the teens and twenties has it difficult when there is such focus on new "American Idols" rather than established artists. The stars fade quickly for many because they were just a creation of marketing and when the industry finds a better money maker, on to the next pop star.

He was a musical genious who could turn out hit after hit, but he burned himself out. He can't hang anymore. I despair, i've not listened to this guy in months, except bits of N.E.W.S. which is utter drivel as was Xpectation.I loved seeing him last year cause he's still great live, but his studio stuff is not interesting, just plain dull. On nearly every album, he used to be able to knock off at least one song that'd put a smile on your face and you'd happily listen to it years later. What happened to that man? Most of his recent output sits there collecting dust.I feel so sad cause he used to be so great. I know he's experimenting but aren't things generally supposed to improve as they evolve? THANKS TO LARRY, MANI AND "THE TRUTH" PRINCE LOST HIS SOUL.

Hard to believe it's the same guy these days, he sounds like a man that now realises he peaked creatively in his mid-twenties.
oh well. It's all subjective right? But IMO, this is also the same guy who wrote "la,la, la, he, he, hee" back in the good old days and "Avalanche" recently. Granted, anyone can pick and choose lyrics over the past 25 years and prove whatever point they want. Personally, I don't think he's "lost it" necessarilly, he may just be bored writing about the usual Prince subjects: sex, partying, generic love song, repeat... no, no, no, this is just your same old BORING argument that he doesn't sing about sex and parties anymore. First of all THAT isn't exactly true; he still sings about sex, just not explicitly and he still sings about parties, just with "accurater knowledge of Christ and the Father". damn, who can defend Prince for all the religious bait and all the race bait from the last couple of years? Only a fool would defend that kind of crap. prince needs to get his head out of the Larry cloud before he crashes back onto earth with a huge smack, leaving him completely wracked for the rest of his carreer.

there are upposed to be at least tens of unreleased albums, if not more than a hundred. How do I know? because he used to brag about this when he was trying to release hismelf from his 100 million dollar contract. Promising his fans "freedom"and this acces to all those vault songs in return of their support... and what did he do? he sued them, screwed them and divided them up untill the point of no return. prince has gone low and will go even lower.

"a bit too seriously" is a true understatement imo... Prince takes himself WAY too serious. How else can you sell bullcrap and say with a straight face that you are all about "the truth"? Either he takes himself way too serious or he is just like a preacher talking truth in order to make money and fuck with people's minds. Oh wait, he is also hypocritical since he blackballs real preachers for doing just that. [This message was edited Thu Jun 26 0:24:18 PDT 2003 by huggy]

As with everything it is going to be 'To each his/her own.' I miss the care free love4oneanother Prince who captured my heart and imagination for so many years. He made music that sort of said 'Hey life is short. To short for hate. So do what you have to to be happy. And let everyone else do the same.' Yes, you can say he is getting older and like everyone his views and ideas have also matured. But it's the direction that it he is heading into that worries the shit out of me. He just seems to have stopped having fun and loving life.

The man has turned into a JW. They sit around and wait for Armageddon and the rest of the people on the earth to be destroyed. His best friend is LG, Is Mani the love of his life, probably Mayte was. No wonder he is puting out instrumentals. The man has no inspiration to write songs anymore! Please Prince go back to the funk, the humour and the R&B.News to me sounds like the soundtrack for a doomsday movie.

*** And you sound prejudiced, but who cares ...? Last time I looked most JW's weren't sitting down at all. There's probably one knocking at your door right now. I'm just glad it isn't me. Which just goes to prove that you shouldn't believe Prince when he talks about his music. That said,I'm sure there's a ton of unreleased tracks, I've got a crapload myself. My point is not that they don't exist, my point is that they may not be the all-time Prince classics that some people seem to think he's sitting on. There are some great tunes in there, but most of what i've heard so far is average at best. I think most people want it because it's "forbidden fruit" more than anything.

Most of it IS average, no doubt. The fans still hope he will release all of it but that won't happen. It would be good if he could make an album with the best of the vault on it, but that's probably wishful thinking?

I've said it before and i'll say it again- he doesn't need to do anything anymore- he's already a guaranteed legend. He could release piles and piles of shite, but his mark has been made, his legacy is complete. And as long as he still plays live- and he is still da man live- i couldn't care less. Agreed NEWS and Xpectation are pretty crappy, but it doesn't matter. And just for the record, name somebody else who been making music for the same length of time as him making music that is any good? “If I can shoot rabbits/then I can shoot fascists”
