Prince gave Brown Mark and David Rifkin an idea of song that they worked into the groove that we all know as Kiss. When Prince heard what they did he took it back and really didn't give them the credit they deserved.

If you listen to the boots it is clear that the song had no hope with David and Mark.

I think that's inaccurate. Prince gave them a demo song that he wasn't a big fan of, and Mazerati tried to make a song of it. They weren't big fans of it, and so they decided not to use it. It's reported that Prince threw it onto UTCM near the end, just like he did with WDC on PR. They certainly helped arrange it, but it WAS first and foremost a Prince song.

I gather you didn't read the interview with David in DMRS. It also seems doubtful that you have heard the boots.

I've heard the Mazerati version of the song. But,I have not read the interview with DMSR. Nevertheless, I don't know how much we can trust any interview. There are a lot of people who claim to be the work behind Prince's music. An interview doesn't make it true, as I have read information that stated exactly what I said.

However, considering we have both read different things, it's really impossible to say for sure what is true and what is not. We will just have to appreciate Kiss for the pop masterpiece it is, and never be sure who deserves the credit for it. Fair 'nuff? smile

Well as David's version of the story was also confirmed by Susan Rogers (engineer), Brown Mark, various members of Mazaratti, and the fact that we can hear for ourselves what Prince did with the song and what it was turned into tells me that in this case we can be quite sure.

They all get some credit, but of course Prince would get the most if you need to rank it. Afterall, it's his interpretation of the song we hear on record. hmm

Alex Hahn tells the story much the same way, but he interviewed all of the same people. Come to think of it, reading Possessed is a lot like DMSR deja vu. Whatever.

Kiss belongs to Prince. He wrote it. Others probably reworked it. But the final result is one of my all-time favorite Prince "hits." In fact, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, Kiss was the song that finally convinced me that Prince was in a league by himself. It was my introduction to his genius. And the video is TIGHT!
