Wow!! You guys came up with some gems! That is why I fell in love with Prince, he is such a poet!!! No one on this planet writes lyrics like that man. Here are some of my favs, although they aren't all opening lyrics.

"If I was your girlfriend would you remember to tell me all the things you forgot when I was your man..."

"Lady cab driver can you take me for a ride, I don't know where I'm going cuz I don't know where I've been."

Various lyrics:

From "Anna Stesia" - "Gregory looks just like a ghost and then a beautiful girl the most who wets her lips to say, we could live for a little while if you could just learn to smile, you and I could fly away..."

From "Joy In Repetition" - "The song was a year long and had been playing 4 months when he walked into the place"

From "The Ballad of Dororthy Parker" - "...I ordered, yeah let me get a fruit cocktail I ain't too hungry, Dorothy laughed, she said sounds like a real man to me, wanna take a bath, I said cool but I'm leaving my pants cuz I'm kinda going with someone... (Does it get any better than that?!!!)

I could go on and on but I'll stop here.
perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

yep JAssyGF...it catches you right away. and let's you know
he's ready to GET down!

a couple i thought of:

"called you yesterday didn't answer your phone
main drag is knowing that you're probably no alone"

from 17 days the musical intro (the kick of the drums)
leads into the above couplet which kinda lets U know
p is at home "depressed and about to cry" cuz he's been
waiting 17 days for his baby!"

love the whole atmopheric set up...

how about the OPening to NO CALL U?
or this one:

"have you ever been so lonely that U felt like U were
the only one in this world?

"have U ever wanted 2 play with someone so much U'd
take anyone boy or girl?"

2 serious questions that open up the majestic
ANNA STESIA

the piano intro, this couplet all the way till the
GOD is love coda...what a wonderfully crafted song!

i also like the opening lines to:
let's pretend we're married...

(great minds think alike)

another cool one are the opening verses (questions)
from IF I WERE YOUR GIRLFRIEND.

The first time i heard the lyrics i said to myself...what
kinda s**t is he saying! then when i got further on in
the song i got what was going on and said...DAMN,what a
hip,cool tune...how come i never asked a ladyfriend this?

every time i play this one i smile.
particularly in the coda when he's talking to his lady
(the last line is PRICELESS!)

the linn drum rhythm is like a heartbeat...slays me which
each play.

s-rose...superb topic. i'm jealous. wish i had thought of
it! (seriously good job sr..youngca...)

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
before they conquer every heart?

I never meant 2 cause u any sorrow
I never meant 2 cause u any pain.

In France a skinny man died of a big disease with a little name
by chance his girlfriend came across a needle and soon she did the same.

Open your heart open your mind
A train is leaving all day
A wonderful trip through our time
And laughter is all u pay

In a word or 2, it's u I wanna do
No, not cha body, yo mind u fool.

There's so many songs, I don't know where to begin, but here goes:

"Whoever said that elephants are stronger than mules?"
from "Paisley Park"

Not an opening, but one of the coolest lyrics ever...

and,

"Prince? Ain't that a bitch! That skinny muthafucka with the high voice??!!"

and,

"What if I called you silly names, just like the one's that you call me?"

and,

"Lemme tell you what I did...I took another bubble bath, with my pants on, all the fighting stopped, next time I'll do it sooner..."

and,

"She had the cutest ass he ever seen, and he did too they were meant to be..."

Finally,

"Some people tell I got great legs, can't figure out why you make me beg...some people think I'm kinda cute, but that don't compute when it comes to Y-O-U..." (that entire song is brilliantly written).

Or

Ok, guys.

Some of these don't seem genius : - ) --

BUT, MOST of them remind me of what a great lyricist Prince once was. (and must still be deep down).

Anybody can work up to a good hook.

But it takes a true artist to kick off a song with a great first five seconds.

Notice, there aren't any entries from Rainbow Children.
And few from his latest albums, actually.

I desperately want Prince to get back to writing clever, artistic lyrics again, instead of heavy-handed doctrine with long, awkward meanderings...

This history proves he more able than most
