Info about Small Club... Hey
I just got my hands on Small Club, love it!!! But I want to know info about that night...did he actually bother to let people at the concert know he was going to be at a club later that night,or what? Or were people just supposed to be mindreaders? I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

I believe it was the kind of aftershow where Prince might have suggested going to a club to maybe play later on in the evening. Then, a couple of people in the know told a couple other people, and everyone took their chances. They ended up witnessing one of the most coveted Prince performances ever. Lucky bastards. He told it right after the show to someone who directly called 't Paard and a radiostation who anounced it about 30 minutes after the main concert ended... *Correction* He called Paradiso first which was booked that night, then 't Paard... for all you new orger's...
i don't know about downloading the small club tape...but if that's works...cool. since we aren't supposed to solicit bootlegs...i won't tell you how i got mine...cuz i can't remember! back in the days of speciality record stores a person could find imports and cutting edge stuff...i think i got mine that way. in the 80's prince's unreleased stuff was easy to find... in speciality places...but.. well anyway that was then. on the small club contents: its one of the best recordings of a prince's aftershow ever. the band appears to be:guitars:prince & miko bass:levi drums:sheila keyboards:fink & boni... i'm trying to remember if eric leeds & atlanta bliss are on it (i haven't played it in years...my stereo is acting up) what i do know is there are some "killer moments" on this sucker...rave2THE joy (wow...funk-rock) just my imagianation..lord does p do this one well...dmsr... (done in a different way than on 1999) people without (spooky...nice...) forever in my life & i'll take you there (boni screaming her GUTS out...the band is SMokin'... there's more gems here...but i'll let somebody else tell ya. if you new orgers ever get this one,,,you'll FREAK! i gotta see if my stereo is functioning...i gonna go pull this out of the basement!

Atlanta Bliss is on it but Eric isn't as he had a cold. It really is the greatest Prince boot ever and has been re issued loads. The first issue was on 'X records' The last (2 my knowledge) was on 'Thunderball'

Damn. My first post and I commit a faux pas. I must re-read those message board rules once more. ____________________________

Discussing the music is fine, but on Prince.org, we have to protect the site from legal problems - so please don't (a) ask "where can I get bootleg X" and (b) advertise or distribute bootlegs.
It's all in the site rules, for anyone that cares to look. Hint: Offers to copy CDs etc should be done privately and not in the forums

This show is amazing. Prince has never, ever topped this show... did I say EVER? I've got damn near every soundboard show available, and nothing touches Small Club. DMSR is too friggin' funky on this.
Side note: The soundman working that night had to change his identity and have plastic surgery on account of the Minneapolice. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Thats the highlight for me. "Who's the fool saying will, its WOULD!!" yeah mon. its a classic. this version makes the G-bridge one sound like barry manilow. (ha ha) rave is a Blast! (i wants the crips miko!) oh yeah...does anybody notice that levi's nickname (says boni) is alfred. and that prince is referred to as frankie ( if not on this tape on LOVESEXY and a few other after show tapes) i wonder where that nickname came from? dmsr & imagination...what more do U want? (outstanding...incredible...)

The first issue was on 'X records' The last (2 my knowledge) was on 'Thunderball' Eric actually tells the story that he didn't want to go that night so he ignored the call. He laughed because he said it was his luck that he missed a great show. And to make matters worse Prince gave all the ones that went that night a bonus to kind of teach Eric a lesson. Side note: The soundman working that night had to change his identity and have plastic surgery on account of the Minneapolice. I still think this show is way overrated. I loved it when it came out because of the sound quality and for Just my Imagination. But Boni's voice on this is like nails on a chalkboard for me and it just needed Eric. My favorite aftershow is the ONA Paris aftershow with Sheila E and Candy. The Lovesexy band on Small Club sounded like they were running to keep up with Prince, the Paris ONA aftershow was an amazing jam session and they all kept up. I love the ONA paris aftershow, but the band wasn't all that tight... Way too many mistakes... The Lovesexy band was Tight... And eh... Sheila E. wasn't at the ONA Bataclan "aftershow"... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

wonder..i see your point about the small club recording
being overrated cuz it was soundboarded...and i dig what you're saying about boni B's screaming, too. but i like her gospel-shouts (that's soul singin' man!) patti & aretha do this all the time. its part of the gospel tradition. if one's not accustomed to this style of singing it can "drive U up the wall! i agree..i missed eric. every after show show i have that he's a part of is special cuz of mr. madhouse. (i'm trying to remember which performance eric is blowin' his horn and p says "shut da fuck up eric!" classic... oh yeah i think its on MUTINY from 1987 paris show. i still like the small club one the best. Oops! I meant the Nov 3 Rotterdam Nighttown show not Paris. And I stick to what I said before. The Lovesexy band was tight but they had some weak links. And IMO the first jam session of Nighttown puts anything on Small Club to shame. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I loved Boni's backing vocals (with Sheila) but some of those solos sounded like she was in pain or was trying to clear her throat.
