the east experiment..does it work or not? after listening to east, i believe it is the most experimental track that i have ever heard from prince. i am happy to hear that he is continuing to push myself musically but with all experiments, some work and some dont.
...after listening to east a couple of times, im not sure if it does or not. its too early to make any real judgement on the music. how do the orgers feel?

The intro "Arabic/Oriental" sound doesnt' do it for me . . . it sounds too much like one of those Casio pre-programmed keyboard sounds.
The guitar work in the middle is cool. It seems like whenever it's a "free-flow" jam, it always ends up sounding like Madhouse. Anyone agree?

Just a guess, as I haven't heard North OR East, but those arabic, oriental sounds might have something to do with the song's title? Did North sound cold to you? "Knowledge is preferable to ignorance. I thought "East" was fantastic! And I'm not butt kissing. I found "North" to be merely average. Though the piano breakdown at the end of North was really beautiful and impressive. East was really good all the way through, imo. As good as anything on Xpectation (ok, maybe not Xpedition good).

I don't really see what's so revolutionary about these tracks. They're simply impromptu jam sessions, the kind of stuff he's been doing for years. This is just one of the first times he's ever released an album worth of them.
There's several local bars near where I live that have Jazz nights, where local performers will hang out and play endlessly. The music is much like what I hear on NEWS. It's not some brand new approach to music, but its intriguing nonetheless. [This message was edited Fri Jun 20 12:46:33 PDT 2003 by Tom]

imo, this whole news project kinna reminds me of the instrumentals on studio nights, the musical noodlin around in the studio and all that. sorta like regresscence, in a way.

I really enjoyed these first two tracks. These have a lot of depth for improv's and I like the melodies that are inside these lengthy tracks. for improv songs, they really do a fantastic job.
They are wonderful, and I am lookin forward to the whole album
