Xpectation was... interesting. Some good moments, but it's a hard listen. Kamasutra on the other hand, sucks farts out of dead cats. NEWS... from the sound of "North" it will be a continuation of the directionless meandering improvisation we heard on Xpectation... nice to hear it at least once, and of course I respect Prince's desire to try new things... but I can't help wishing that Prince would just go back to doings songs. I mean, that's what he does best. Still, I'm guessing he didn't create NEWS for the fans, he created it for himself. Which is fine. I just won't be getting very excited about it prince CAN'T WIN!! it's sad but true. when he releases instrumentals people claim boredom, when he releases lyrics reflecting what's going on in his mind, why then people are enraged by his lyrics!! oh my dear lord . . .

I predict the funk will be found in 'South'.
North: searching upwards, mellow, healing - nothing really earth shattering to perhaps anyone but himself... ...but SOUTH...if he don't get nasty down there...I ain't buying the party.

Prince will never 'win' on the org. I think that's more of a tribute to the diversity of his fanbase than anything else.
The piano segment at the end of the North track made the recording worthwhile for me. I think Prince is having fun with his music which pleases me. I prefer listening to him put out what he wants rather than try a commercial album like Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. I'll wait to hear at least one more track before I decide to buy. As for Roy Hargrove. I think his aim is somewhat different with the RH Factor, but I absolutely adore the album, and can't wait to see him live at the Montreal Jazz Fest next week. I also think that Prince could be quite a good jazz musician if he edited himself a little more. "Gravity isn't just a law, it's a good idea."

I do not find this a disappointment at all. I ordered the CD, and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest.
This is not boxed-in elevator music, I've never heard music like this in an elevator. You need to look out your window and listen to this music. Real Musicians here!

lovemachine said: From what I am to understand from Eric Leeds this cd was basically recorded live which means that Prince probably spent like 2 hours or less on this cd and now he gets to sell it to everyone for $10.
Everyone? Don't you have to be a member of the NPGMC to buy this CD? Pretty expensive, if you ask me... Well, I guess this is the first Prince album I won't buy... Olivier

Well if you had read Miles Davis's autobiography he didn't mean that Prince would be the next Duke Ellington as a jazzman. No not all. It was all about creativity in any kind of music he plays. And he said exactly that Prince had the talent to go as far as Duke Ellington. Listening to his production over the years, what Prince has achieved is fabulous.

$700 for seven CDs of Prince samples. If you bought this, you should have been allowed to use his samples in songs without paying fees. Don't know if this can be.

I believe folks need to stop with the comparing. It's evident Prince goes in a direction that he wants to. It seems like many people want every cd to sound the same and when it isn't here we go with the tags. I have never heard him say that he was trying to sound like anyone else (Coltrane, Miles). I respect a musician that is not afraid to go in which direction he or she feels like, that's what musical freedom is all about.
