Quick! If I was Prince's Business Manager......A Manifesto Alright, what would you do if you could direct Prince's career for a year - let's say from July '03 through July '04...and he would have to listen to your advice 100%...
I would... July '03 through Sept '03: I would have him leave Toronto/Paisley Park and travel to New York City to record an album to be produced by N.E.R.D. It would be sickly funky, but with a hard-melodic edge. A new band would be assembled to help record it - drums would still be handled by Mr. Blackwell, keys would be Renato, bass would be some amazing jazz bassist who could also sing, guitar would be a sickly talented blue-rock based musician like Monte Montgomery from Austin, Texas, and I would rehire Mr. Leeds for sax and Atlanta Bliss for trumpet. I would have him write a duet to be sung with India.Arie. It would be cutting-edge, consistent, but still uniquely Princely. 12 album songs would be cut, as well as 5 non-abum tracks for B-sides. October '03: I would shop the finished album to a MAJOR label and sign a solid, three album deal. November '03: Prince and the band would rehearse in the Virgin Islands. In the later part of the month, Prince would fly to LA to appear on "American Idol" to judge contestents who would sing his classic songs. After that, Prince would film a multi-million dollar video to be directed by...Spike Jones...the world will never see Prince in this light... December '03: A HUGE MULTI-STAGE PROMOTIONAL ASSAULT!!! Prince will appear on The Today Show, MTV, Jay Leno, ect. Prince will also grant numerous interviews with all sorts of newspapers and magazines - People, Newsweek, Modern Religion, Rolling Stone, Vibe, etc. He would record an MTV Unplugged Show featuring just him on acoustic guitar for several vlassiv songs with many, juicy stories around the songs creation. Also, right before the mid Dec release of his new album I would book him on Saturday Night Live to sing two songs - one new and one old, "The Beautiful Ones". Prince would also appear in several skits - even allowing the show to poke fun at himself. Mid Dec '03: New album is released to take advantage of the Xmas buying season. Jan - Feb '04: To help build momemtum around the album, Prince would stage numerous hit and run shows all over the US and Canada in small clubs, colleges, radio stations, record stores, etc. The shows would be announced the same day they would be scheduled and would be free flowing and loose. He would randomly appear at back alley clubs and play three hour sets. Mar - Apr '04: Prince and his band would perform all across Europe in a tour highlighting his strong fanbase there. He would hit Dublin, London, Manchester, Belfast, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Olso, Rome, Florence, Zurich, Belrin, Munich, Brussels, Milan, Prague, Lisbon. May '04: Prince and his band would make an Asian tour. He would play Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo, and Yokosuka, Japan, Perth and Sydney Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand, as well as Hawaii. June - July '04: Prince would finally hit the US for a summer concert tour that would hopefully pack outdoor stadiums all across the US and Canada. In the end of July I would have Prince, in conjunction with Warner Bros release a HUGE Boxset of rarities, alternate versions of songs, unreleased tunes, live track, etc. Also, he would release six live CD sets - one from a show in 1980, one from one in 1984, one from a show in 1986, once from a show in 1988, one from a show in 1996, and one from his most recent concert tour.

If one was able to plan things this way... he has my blessing.
On a serious note, he will need to write some good stuff first

uh.. apart from the 'being produced by NERD' thing (Prince could easily outdo NERD if he wanted to), yeah, okay. It would be nice but it's never going to happen.
Prince don't wanna. | |

the only problem (!) I have with this is that American Idol won't be on TV until early next year. I think Prince would be a great source of songs but knowing how much he talks, he'd look stooopid as a judge.
Maybe then Paula Abdul could sing her Prince song onstage and we could critique her! The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018.
