In 1990,Prince offered Anita Baker the song "Hold Me" for inclusion on her 'Compositions' album, but she turned it down. She made a mistake. The song is a beautiful, tender ballad.Prince's own version of it has been circulating for years.
I don't know anything about a "jazzy house track".Anyone have any more info?

I don't know anything about a "jazzy house track".Anyone have any more info? Joyce Kennedy from Mother's Finest was offered a track too back in the mid-80's and like Anita, she turned that down. Whats with these ladies? Is it ego? Or do they simply find the lyrics "unsuitable" 4 them? Just wondering tho! [This message was edited Sat Jun 14 11:20:19 PDT 2003 by Harlepolis]

Prince doesn't suit everybody, and his songs aren't always all that.

"Hold Me" was crap, IMO. I'd have turned it down, too. The lyrics were simplistic: "Hold me, and we can make it through the rain/Hold me, and we can weather anything"
Not exactly Prince's best songwriting effort. The Normal Whores Club

Not exactly Prince's best songwriting effort. --- It is a Rnb love song are you expecting Shakesphere. Beside it is not like Mrs.Kennedy had some hot material out. She has not done anything in years.

Actually,I think Anita's 1990 album 'Compositions' was kinda weak anyway. It certainly could have used the Prince track.

Weak? What r u talking about? Actualy, she was trying to prove a point when she released that album. While everybody is going too "New Jack Swing", "Soul2Soul" and the whole over-produced/overused-programming & the whole synthsizer saga. Homegirl, hooked up with her band and did a "Live oriented"-produced album thats why the critics thought it was a bit "out there" in terms of commercial music. I think it was a bald move from Miss Baker 2 release an LP like that at THAT time

Aren't all that as in "unclassy" or as in "str8 up wack"??? Both. But also just not an artist's "type" of song. I mean, I don't know how Prince offers songs to people. But, can you imagine some androgynous, sex-obsessed man coming up to you and saying he's written a song with you in mind? Might throw a few people off...

I also loved "Rapture" compared to her other albums and whent she released a hits CD last year (or was it this year...I think it was last year), I sold off her other discs. "Rapture" is an excellent album, back to front!
