To me his lyrics have always been hit or miss.on his best days he can be an amazing lyricist.but the rest of the time it's just by the numbers rhymes.

You can do this pretty much any artist to prove whatever point you want. Selectively pulling out certain lyrics over such a long career doesn't really say much IMO.

If this is true, it's because he needs inspiration. Something that maybe lacking in his life right now.

He had some questionable lyrics back in the day too "when I'm makin' love, it's like surgery...".

But I agree that in the past few years, his lyrics smack of narrow-mindedness and offer less and less clever wordplay.
