Why is Prince not the best on any single instrument? Because he is the single best musician on the planet. You will always be able to argue that there are better guitarists or bassists or drummers or piansts - its all very subjective.
However, you can not find a single musicia force that is as self contained and good at all aspects of music as Prince is. The fact that he does it all was the main attraction whe he first hit the scene. In this age where real talent and skills dont get respect anymore, this unqiue aspect of Prince gets lost in the proverbial shuffle. To this day, no one can single handedly crank out lbums with the quality and frequency that Prince does. He still gives you the most complete live show of any single artist. How many people are actually standing on stage singing and playing songs that they wrote alone and produced and arranged on the album themselves? Is Prince the best drummer? No. Best bass player? Larry Graham is still alive. Best guitarist? Damn near - I cant think of anyone much better - including Santana and Van Halen. Is he the best musician alive? Hell yeah | |

nicely written and said. I have actually thought the same thing bout Prince and wanted to start this kind of thread before but yours is better told than I could ever write it.

an artist is an artist whatever the medium or format or instrument.
i'm sure if someone plays the oboe all day 24/7 they will be the best fucking oboe player in the world. but, thats exactly that. o b o e. an artist picks and chooses his paints/instruments and the variety of which brings to life a colourful canvas to enjoy. why should he be the best drummer as the act of drumming in the bigger picture is a means to an end. | |
