Prince pre and post 88 poll...

There seems 2 be a big split here. Lotsa people seem 2 hate (or at least dislike) Princes stuff post Lovesexy era. It's the same with Frank Zappa. There's loadsa people who hate Zappa's stuff after the initial Mothers of invention period. If U like Princes stuff after Lovesexy post * if U don't post ! simple as!! If U want 2 elaborate feel free!

To me, its not that clear cut.

I think the pre 88 stuff is best, but songs like Thieves, Gett Off and Holy River rank among the best.

To me, Prince was best in the 80's but some of his best songs are in the 90s and the future.

Could anybody say that "The Everlasting Now" is not better than "Dance On"?

Prince is just as good, but his output has slowed. Songs like "Cookie Jar" are old school jammin, but you never got to hear them back in the day.

Tick tick bang!

i can't answer that question so simply. i love stuff from all eras. i can say that i don't dislike anything prior to 1990. after 1989 it gets shaky, but then he picks things up again in 1993. i have my moods where all i wanna hear is come, gold experience and chaos and disorder but then i have my moods when i all i wanna hear is black album, lovesexy, sott. then i have those early days with dirty mind, controversy, 1999. man, i love it all...except newpowersoul!

I agree. It's a matter of opinion and taste.

I think the pre 88 stuff is best, but songs like Thieves, Gett Off and Holy River rank among the best.

I would agree in principle, and I'd list different songs, maybe.

To me, Prince was best in the 80's but some of his best songs are in the 90s and the future.

I'd agree with the 1st 2 parts, and I'm hopeful that the 3d part will be correct.

Could anybody say that "The Everlasting Now" is not better than "Dance On"?

wave

The groove is funky, but overall, he's made a lot better songs than TEN.

The Dirty Mind-Lovesexy era is my favorite era. It cements Prince's status as an all-time great. I think the boots and live performances from that era pretty much confirm that.

Much of his work since Lovesexy has enhanced that standing. There are too many examples -- hits and otherwise -- that demonstrate that. But I don't HATE the post-Lovesexy period, I just don't like it as much, and at many times have been disappointed.

The fact that I am not as interested in his new stuff doesn't necessarily mean it's not as good as the 80's stuff (even though I may think that, it's not necessarily true).
