Hendrix Vs Prince =

Prince

Without a shadow of a doubt, Prince can play anything Hendrix did and more. Hendrix died in his twenties and Prince is now 45 and still playing, its obvious.

But, and a big but, if Hendrix was still alive 2day, he would be making his guitar talk down the telephone by now!

Nona Hendrix is female and I don't think she is dead or plays guitar. Wrong forum I think.

Damn! It's been a fucking long time since prince.org has had this stupid fucking debate.

At least 3 or 4 days now.

I'm not the biggest Hendrix fan of all time but he did possess an absolute command over the guitar that I've never heard anywhere else - the damn thing just had no choice but to obey his hands

but those strats probably didn't have a problem with it

It's nice to see your suport for Prince, and I'm sure he'd be touched by this comment. But we've all learnt to respect artists as individuals. No artist is better or worse, they just do there own thing and we either like it or we don't.

PS, TLC are fucking shite.

Wow. You know what? This is the message I've always tried to convey in these "vs." threads, because the arguments always go nowhere with nothing resolved. It's as if people think the showdown will lead to a victor. But, I never thought to word it exactly like this. I hope everyone reads this, because it would settle a lot of disputes here on the org.

Well done!

It's a somewhat unfair comparison. Prince's breadth of styles seems to be a little greater than Jimi's, but Jimi never really had the time to develop his singular talent.

Prince is my favorite artist ever, but I'd take Jimi in a walk.

You know something, Prince probably isn't even in the top 30 gutarists of all time.Every year i look at 'Guitar player' magazines top 100, he doesn't get a look in even then!
I'm not saying he's as bad as that, he's just not an all time great, or a visionary or pioneer on the instrument like Jimi Hendrix was.Get a grip! rolleyes

Andy Warhol could out play anybody in any magazine. His artistry is unexplainable. same for his hairstyle

If it wasn't 4 Jimi Princes guitar playing wouldn't sound like it does cuz at the time Jimi was doing shit that nobody had done like, ever!!
Jimi was unique. Thing is Prince isn't known just 4 his guitar playing it's the complete package. He writes, he plays (and not just guitar he's hardly a slouche on bass drums and keys!) he dances, produces, acts (OK bad example!!) But thats the thing Jimi will always be viewed as the best guitarist ever and that's fair enough but saying Prince isn't as great is stupid. He's different that's all. Christ Miles called him the Duke Ellington of his generation!! But that's a whole new thread I fear!

If we are limiting the issue to guitarists, I wouldn't disagree. . . much.

I actually have seen him on that list, although it was at least 7-8 years ago. He was also on the cover of Guitar World some years back. As I said in my prior post, Jimi is my choice, but I find it hard to imagine that there are too many guitarists out there who are badder than he is. I have also seen several articles quoting musicians and critics as saying Prince's prowess as a guitarist is underrated.

Top 30 guitarist, probably not. But somewhere in the top 100.

But Prince is like Magic Johnson. His all-around game is close to unstoppable. Prince doesn't rely on one skill to get over. He's equally adept at many.

Prince IS the most exciting player to watch without a shadow of doubt, i'll give him his props for that.Moving around alot (sometimes running) while playing takes some skill.

I agree that this artist vs. artist stuff accomplishes nothing but we can play with it. Afterall, not a damn word ever typed on this site has really ever meant anything in the grand scheme of things- yet we type on.
For me there is really no comparison. When it comes to guitar Hendrix is the undisputed king, particularly if you look at when he did what he did. There's nothing Prince can do to change that. As far as overall musicianship and showmanship Prince is the king. However, I'd hate to see Jimi short-changed and written off as simply a guitarist like Jeff Beck or George Benson. In fact, in the short amount of time he recorded he made some songs that rank right up there with anything P has ever done; many of which hit twice as hard as Prince's who has always had his eye on the Pop world-- atleast until recently. The glaring difference in Prince's favor is his ability to play multiple-instruments, dance, and combine more influences.
Needless to say I respect them both and if you add Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Charles Mingus, and Ani Difranco to that list you have my favorite musicians in the traditional sense (not counting my favorite hip-hop artists).

Puh-leeze get a grip. Have you heard Hendrix's Voodoo Child?

Doesn't matter how many people came along later and copped the licks. Hendrix is the innovator.

I need to add a comment to this thread. I've listened to LOTS of Hendrix and I believe that he was fabulous. But, Prince as an entertainer blows him away. I LOVE that guitar work in "We Gonna Make It Funky."
