Alex Hahn book depresses me.

Now I know too much about Prince. What a horrible guy he is. Alex Hahn, thanks for telling us about the real Prince--warts and all. Book depressed me, but it had to be said.

The part about Tony M pissed me off. Read it and grind your teeth. mad

I never thought Prince was a perfect human being or anything. I just like the guy's music. If he fucks up, then it just means he's human like the rest of us. Don't need Alex Hahn to tell me that.

After seeing Hahn on the BBC documentary lately i made a mental note not to buy his book.
Seems he is just after a piece of the "Purple Pie".
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

i think the hahn book also surprised me at first; but his bias shines through and hahn comes off as some dude with penis envy who's trying to make a buck off prince like all the other hanger-ons throughout the years. is it a coincidence that every single quote seems to reflect on prince in a negative light? or is it just hahn filtering out anything that ever portrayed prince in a positive light? i think the answer is obvious.
that being said, hahn does make some good points. for example the truly creative period of an artist is rarely more than 10-12 years. look at the run prince had from 1979-89 which will never be topped in modern music; i'm not saying that the creative juices stopped flowing after that, but certain themes, riffs, lyrics were repeated (and yet he managed a number of top ten hits, which speaks to the power of his music). another good point is how prince seemingly chose to develop artists based on a look, rather than on musical talent alone. maybe this shows some insight into the pop music market - that a look is just as important to the sound to the demographic that buys CDs and determines hits. but in this case it failed (like trying to mold carmen electra into a rapper).
btw i'm new here and happy to have found this place!

Tony M secretly told members of the NPG that he was going to, quote, "Shove black down that Nigga's (Prince) throat if it's the last thing I do". Meaning, he thought Prince wasn't black enuff.

Prince used the Diamonds And Pears rap stuff to appeal to street type people--but who are we kidding. lol

Somebody needed to shove some skills down Tony M's throat. He would have been eaten alive in any rap cipher.

Now P works with Common and Chuck D. So who needs black shoved down his throat now?

Woah there... are we that hardcore on this site, that we resort to character assassination efforts against anyone who criticises our hero? Come on let's leave these personal comments out, they demean us all.

Criticise the book by all means, but do we really need to resort to insulting the character of the author? At least someone still cares enough to write about Prince, that's a rarity in itself.

I haven't read the book, and it doesn't really interest me since I'm not interested in Prince as a person, just as a musician. However if his sources were people like Per Nilson, I'd say his thoughts hold some weight. Per knows his shit, and was very dedicated in his own books about Prince.
