Could Prince make a modern rock album?

I bought the new Radiohead album, and I think it's great. I enjoy listening to the way they construct songs, and the guitar work is amazing.

Then I got to thinking, what if Prince made an album like this? I think he has it in him to do so, but would he? Years ago he seemed to be interested in creating cutting-edge music. He brought together rock and funk in amazing ways. I'm enjoying his jazz stuff, but I don't know if the jazz he's creating is considered good or just mediocre.

I would like Prince to go back to rock and record a modern rock album. What do you guys think?

radiohead is so boring, depressing.

i mean not the kind of depressing i like,
i like depressing music when it sounds like
there's a light at the end of the tunnel.wink

about Prince, don't know. why rock, i liked
the rainbow children: the music, not the message
or all that 'truth' and whateva stuff.

as long as Prince keeps it
funky, i'm allright.

Like it or hate it, I think the best evidence of Prince's abilities in making a "modern" rock album would have been with Chaos & Disorder. It is a 7 year old album now, but I don't think most rock has changed in 7 years. Which is exactly why I don't listen to it anymore.

Hey! I said MOST rock! MOST! So I don't need any of you to cite 10 rock artists that you like to prove me wrong, followed by a comment somewhere along the lines of how I don't know music.

PS. Haven't heard the new Radiohead album yet, but I am quite a fan. How have the reviews been for it?

True. I really like that album. It's different to Princes regular work, but it dosn't mean it's bad.

I only wish Prince would try to make a modern rock record. he could. I think his mindset keeps him firmly rooted in boring territory, and the worshipping yes-men don't help.

he's got nothing to prove anymore, that's too bad for everybody.

It's all that rock that sounds the same, usually, with a 4 bar intro done just with guitar, and then one bar with drums and guitar, and then the whole band joins in. Typically the lead-singers voice is moaning in sound. All of it sounds very similar. There are three styles "modern" rock can take:

PARTY TIME: Let's get down with the pop-punk rock of the likes of Blink 182, Sum 41, and Good Charlotte

SUICIDE TIME: Even though some of these songs might have a message of positivity or love, they all sound incredibly depressing. Listen to the likes of Creed, Pearl Jam, Nickelback, David Usher etc.

MELANCHOLY TIME: Songs of brooding. These "deep" songs ask us questions like, What exactly is a Bittersweet symphony, when won't you call me Superman, and wouldn't an Island in the Sun just burn up?

Occasionally, if the rockers want to add artistic credibility, they will throw in a string section, usually with slow paced, smoothe, minor arrangements.

Special FX are seldom heard, keyboards as well, although these heard a little more often.

Live performances by modern rockers usually involve the lead singer not moving at his microphone, his eyes are looking down at nothing in particular, and whenever there is a space where he doesn't sing, he'll back up for a minute. Sometimes he'll turn around and look at his band before returning. Every song will have a blackout.

That, in a nutshell, is how I would define modern rock, but there are of course other nuances, and exceptions to the rules I have defined.

I'd be surprised if he could at least make one good song anymore, in any category.

No offense Rudy, but this is exactly the problem with too many Prince fans. If he does anything other than a "classic rock" format, then he's "boring"...

Are you saying that anything outside rock is boring?

People please remember that P is a FUNK artist first and foremost. Just because you grew to love him because of his rock abilities, doesn't mean he has to constantly stay where YOU want him musically. Ever since PR, all you rock-based P fans have dissed his albums just because he doesn't go back to the P&TR rock-filled days.

Expand your horizons for a change...

Want rock, go listen to Hendrix, et al...

There are active great rock bands.
Living coulours are coming back, Mike pAtton IS on tomahawk, Slash is playing with izzy duff and scott weiland. Radiohead rules. Smashing pumpkins too. Nine Inch Nails kick ass> Jannes addiction is back. There tons of talented rock bands releasing things.

I'd co-sign and make an addendum: Prince has made some slammin' rock tracks since the P&TR days, including:

Play In the Sunshine (movie version)
The Cross
Electric Chair
Morning Papers
Peach
Endorphinmachine
Chaos and Disorder
I Like It There
Interactive

Prince never does what anyone wants him to do. He does what he wants to do and makes the listener decide whether he or she's down with it.

This is a LAME generalization. If it all sounds the same, why do you have three different category's? Where would the Pixies fall? What about Beck? Radiohead uses tons of special FX and keyboards. NONE of these bands sound alike and none of them just stand there when performing.

It's so funny that you said this, because it is exactly what I was talking about in the post prior to this one.

Once again, I said MOST, MOSTLY, USUALLY, never ALWAYS. People can't seem to understand that just because there are exceptions to the rule, doesn't make the rule for the most part correct. Modern rock is, for the most part, almost as shitty as boy bands and girl popstars.

Those three you mentioned... Pixies, Beck and Radiohead, three of my all time favorite! And three exceptions to the rule! There are others too! but my definition of modern rock still stands. This is a great generalization, because, for the most part, all of today's shitty ass acts are just a generalized pile of garbage. And three descriptions of the musical styles within modern rock is not a helluva lot. It's still a generalization, and one that I think the modern rockers have earned through 10 years of mediocrity and fear of change.

Besides, this is all in good fun, and as I said, there are other nuances and exceptions to these rules. So, there you have it.

point taken, but I just know anytime I buy a new Prince record, which I'm typically not doing anymore, it's going to have that same lame-ass "NEW FUNK" sound that's he just can't get away from. That's what I find to be boring about him. Same production, same grooves, same sounds, all the same NPG-approved crap. he just can't let go.

I could be going out on a limb here, but these days I don't think his music is about art as much as it is a vehicle for his grandstanding. It's like Christian rock radio stations to me - I'll give them a fresh listen all the time but always come away saying, that was awful, there wasn't really any music there.

Whereas with Lenny, I get the message AND the rock. Hopefully he'll soon forget how pretty he is and not lose focus

when you say "modern rock" i'm a bit confused. are blur, radiohead, suede, etc. modern rock? to me, they are brit pop. are creed, 3 doors down, etc. modern rock? to me, they suck. i love Beck but to be honest, he is as modern as Picasso. everything he's done has been done by someone years and years before (like rolling stone, beatles, prince, velvet underground). i think Prince is pretty much capable of everything...perhaps not necessarily great at everything but certainly capable. let's face it, he's done what most of today's artists are doing...15 years ago.

damn gramatical errors!
