One of your least favorites ???

That, with 1999 is my all time favorite Prince album. Glam Slam and Anna Stesia are two of his absolute greatest, and all the others (except maybe When 2 R In Love) are up there as well.

dance on is a great song.

"there's a bass guitar on the loose."

this is a lose-your-mind-on-the-dance-floor track.

the break for the heavy breathing is my favorite.

lots of depressing imagery in the song, too ("...gang nailed his feet to a wooden floor"). come to think of it, gang references appear in a few prince songs: sign o' the times and shy come to mind.

Funny, I always thought they said "there's a bass guitar, Louis" thinking Louis was a nickname or something for Levi!

I thought it was, "There's NO bass guitar in this."
I believe this is correct considering I don't hear any bass guitar in the song and there's another line that says something like, "Bass guitar caught in a spider web."

I just remembered the line: "Bass guitar in spider web, longing for the funk. Oozie gun takes its place in a wagon trunk. Get off me punk...
So, there ya go, there may be bass in the song but it's not a bass guitar.

"Pick It Up", to my knowledge was a shout for the Bassguitar
to be picked up and rubbed down. Cuz right after the chant,
[what I have always percieved to be] the bassguitar gets
picked up and is treated to a serious spanking.

Now, people claim there is no bassguitar in that song? Than
what, may I ask, is that machinegunfire impressionation of
a bassguitar??

ALSO one other thing i have noticed about the song:

" getcho money strait... getcho money strait...getcho money strait! "

that chant is very MJesque... just the arrangement & how it is sung.
i can just hear that coming from a MJ BAD era song.
has that vibe.

another reason 2 love it!

Are you thinking of BAD album track 'Speed Demon', i.e. the line: "get your ticket right"?

Dance On

Oh, pick it up!
There's a bass guitar in this

Grenade Launcher roars in a television sky
Tell me how many young brothers must die

Dance on, dance on
Dance on, dance on

Little Talk Johnny blew the big score
The gang nailed his feet 2 a wooden floor
Nuclear Ban never stays in tune
They all know the words but the music is doomed

Everybody
Dance on, dance on
Dance on, dance on
Pick it up
Dance on, dance on

Dance on, dance on
Dance on, dance on

A bass guitar in spider webs, longing 4 the funk
Uzi gun takes his place in a wagon trunk
(get off me, punk, U ain't sexy)
Stealin' ladies purses then settin' them a'flame
M&M killers playin' Mickey Mouse games

Lord have mercy
Dance on, dance on (Dance on)
Dance on, dance on (Dance on)

It's time 4 new education
The former rules don't apply
We need a power structure that breeds production
Instead of jacks who vandalize
Detroit - what's happenin'?

What color is your money today?
Get your money straight
Everybody dance on
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I got these lyrics from a Prince site...not sure
about the "Nuclear Ban" part tho, I always heard
"NuuuUUUClear Band never stays in tune...".

Do you think that's the lyric?? Or is this another
Prince word-play lyric??? confuse
As in, not getting countries to fully realize a
nuclear ban. They all "know the words", but the "music
is doomed", meaning they all know what's best(nuclear
ban) but the lack of cooperation dooms it for all.

confuse

It's hard playing along...why can't he just tell us
what's on his mind???

"Nuclear ban" part is right.I had to check the lyric sheet though.I kind of see this as a SOTT part2 lyrically.

i refuse to accept that it's "there's a bass guitar in this." and not "there's a bass guitar loose." the first phrase just doesn't jell with the tone of the song.

How's this possibility?

"There's a bass guitar in this" could be a bit of a teaser. The bass guitar doesn't show up (about a measure of some slapping) until the "bass guitar in spider webs" lyric. All up until then, the bass is provided by a keyboard bass. Maybe it was a way of getting the listeners to go, "Wait. Where's that bass guitar? This is a keyboard..." and then the payoff when that lyric & bass show up.

Just a thought.

But, I hear "There's a bass guitar in this," too, for the record.
