North, East, West and South are also known as the '4 corners of the world'.
In the Bible book of Revelation there is a scripture which refers to 4 angels holding back the 4 winds at the 4 'corners' of the earth (i.e North, East, West & South). The Angels hold back the 4 winds until God commands them to release the winds upon the earth. The winds then commence Arrmagedon or 'God's war'. If anyone is interested I will find the particular Scripture and post it here later. Its just a theory, but one I think may be possible. Its certainly the only Biblical interpretation I can think of.
