Prince, he's good at writing songs no matter what.. True, Mayte was a good inspiration for him.. she did have a huge influence on him!!.. But NO DOUBT that his songs about Susannah Melvoin was/is a lot better than songs such as "most beautiful girl in the world" ...

i don't think he was as vulnerable with mayte as he was with susannah and it shows in the songs.
his relationship with mayte seemed built more on aesthetics (i think that's also why he tried to have a baby with her--so the baby would be ubergorgeous). mayte was prince's PYT. the mayte songs attempted to get a little deeper when she got pregnant. but i don't listen to those songs (emancipation disc 2) because they all seem forced like prince was TRYING to get inspired by mayte's pregnancy. but the susannah songs were more complex and moody. there are several mood swings in adore (erykah badu's "green eyes" is similar). in that song, he's anxious, insecure, happy, frustrated, etc. he wasn't talking about just "how fine" she was, he also talked about how he was inspired to lose himself in her.

Thanx ppl, now I know about Susannah too...
I guess I posted this because the only thing I truly knew about was Mayte and only her. Other relationships...? Hmm, never heard of Susannah before, but if U all say sp, I guess she must be one of the big ones...

I agree. Mayte was just somebody Prince thought he should love and marry and thus he made her act and dress in the image he created in his mind. The syrupy punch-less nature of the "love" songs he made for her indicate there wasn't any genuine feeling there. He treated her more like an object and thus glorified her-- far from love. As for Mani, I hate to speculate-- well not really [This message was edited Tue Jun 10 14:01:10 PDT 2003 by whodknee]

Might be something to this. Maybe he felt a need to paint it in such romantic images, too. After all, Mayte wasn't exactly his age... Susannah was probably closer to his age and better able to challenge him in deeper, more signficant ways.

No matter if Mayte was younger than him, and Susannah maybe was more "apropriate" age, he could have loved them both the same.

HerRoyalBadness said: Prince had his best love-song writting era when he was with Mayte.
The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, The Beautiful Experience. He wrote that song for her. Emancipation - almost the whole album was written for/about her and his then upcoming child. Holy River - Let's go down to the holy river, I called my girl and said I had something to give her, I asked her to marry me, she said yes and cried... Friend, lover, sister, mother/wife Kindda says itself, don't u think? But I don't see any beautiful, that loving songs written for Mani... Does that mean that Mayte was his first, one and only, he loved her like nobody else? Isn't he happy with Mani, don't she inspire Prince? Not to diss the poor girl, I don't doubt she is fine as hell, but what is it about her that makes Prince concetrate more about his beliefs (TRC) than about his wife and his child? Is it true, as they say - U never forget your first, true love. You left out The ONE, also awsome love song and SSShhh But there are some before and after that were cold too, especially before Do Me Baby, Scandalous, Adore, Insatiable

Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife is probably the best song that describes what his feelings were at that time. Could you imagine someone, especially Prince, writing a song like that for you?! Holy cow that would be awsome!

I feel that he truly DID love Mayte, he also loved Susannah, you could feel it in the music how much he loved them and then when I heard Man O War I was like ooh Mayte done fucked up!!!
I think with Mani he is keeping the relationship more private more precious although Here on Earth gave me pause and some of the others on ONA but who knows when they were written they fit the end of the Mayte period more than now. Seems like Mayte grew up on him and changed because she was sooo young when they first got together and he shared the whole relationship with us ( Morning Papers) Mani even though she is young it is a more adult spritually based relationship. This one loves him for him not for who she wants him to be... as long as he's happy We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. From the video of TMBGITW - I get the impression that it is more of an ode to women / "girls" in general since it has all ages / cultures / sizes, etc. Very nice video. And while Prince may have been with a specific love during certain time periods, it doesn't necessarily mean that he actually wrote the song during that time period. In fact it could have been written much earlier and reworked for release. I'm sure with his songs there is always an inspiration - but that inspiration may not always be one individual nor necessarily his own personal relationship.
