How did Prince's mom die?

I know that I am kind of late on this but how and when did Prince's mom die. I remember hearing about it when his father died recently but I don't recall reading about his mother. I keep hearing about her referred to here in the past tense. I know that someone here knows what happened.

The late Mattie Baker was remembered as a giving, loving mother, friend and social worker (with the Minneapolis public-school system) who had a "beautiful smile," "a wit about her" and "could communicate with absolutely anyone," according to friends and colleagues who gave eulogies at her funeral last Friday. The most famous of her four children, Prince, was neither visible nor audible at Zion Baptist Church in Minneapolis. Instead, Whitney Houston's recording of "The Greatest Love of All" was played -- twice.
(Jon Bream, March 1, 2002, Minneapolis Star Tribune)

side note? says a lot about the kind of person he is... didn't even go to his mother's funeral.

one would think the reasons for your not attending are quite different from his.

Yes, there are many reasons why someone may not go to their mother's funeral...it doesn't say anything about what kind of person he may be. You never know someone else's situation...until you've been there, don't judge smile

Being neither "visible or audible" doesn't mean he wasn't there.

Thanks for the info guys. I knew that you wouldn't let me down. As far as him not going to the funeral, maby he was afraid of the publicity at what would be such a somber occasion. Maby he didn't want photos out there of him shedding tears.cry

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume his non-attendance was due to his religious beliefs. As I understand it, JW's can't attend funerals in a non-JW church. Since the funeral was in a Baptist church, he can't go. I've got a JW uncle who's hasn't attended several funerals, including his father's because of that.

Thank you...I am happy to correct you.
There are no rules on funeral attendance.
JWs make individual decisions, and it is nobody else's business!

There is also the good possibility that a private memorial service was
held for family and close friends.

That's a shame. Didn't she have a kidney transplant at one time? I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

Prince's mom was very pretty, and she sounded like a cool person to know. If I ever would have had the chance to meet her, I would tell her that she has a very attractive and talented son, and that she must be very proud of him (yeah, corny I know, but that's what I would tell her). smile

that was the excuse given to the press... did he attend his father's funeral?

So if that was said to the press why did you not accept it???
That he had a private service for family and friends???
That is a reasonable thing to do if you are rich and famous but want privacy.
How do you know it was an excuse???

You just want to believe the worse!!!

SAD!!! hmph!

Lying? Whatever, look I just threw in my 2 cents from my own past experience with JW's. It wasn't even written as a negative comment on JW's. Like I said, my uncle pretty much doesn't go to funerals when anyone in my family dies. We all know it's because of his faith and there are no hard feelings because of it. I'm just saying that behavior is consistent with what Prince seems to have done. Of course maybe he just didn't want to go, I really don't know.

I also have a big number of JW's in my family(an aunt, her husband and 6 damn kids). When my uncle (her brother) got married, they wouldn't attend because it was in a church. So there is some truth to Jw's not going into churches.
