When Prince has had a band with him,(Revolution,NPG,etc...) Which studio tracks were recorded completely LIVE.....

(just one take & that's it)

OR

with the base live band (guitar, drums, bass, keys) & then extra instruments such as keys, synths, guitars, scratches & programming,& vocals etc...overdubbed later. ?

i have been wondering since so many sound like they could have been just the one studio take (Shhh,Endorphinemachine, (original version atleast) Damn U,Calhoun Sq,Chaos&Disorder,The Beautiful Ones,Darling Nikki, sexy mf,Morning Papers etc...)

but other songs i havent been sure on.
i think i have read on the Org that When Doves Cry is all Prince, but i thought it was a full Revolution track (minus Brown Mark of course wink )

just something ive been curious about &
it's a discussion i have meant 2 bring up
4 quite awhile.
Ive thought that alot of the songs would have been recorded totally live cos with all the music P has made over the years, surely he wouldnt have the time 2 record everything seperately if he had the luxury of a band!

well, you already know the story of "the power fantastic"...

the npg tracks i suspect as a band done in one take... well, the way prince is anymore, we know he can't help but go in and mess with it... so who knows.

haven't had time to sit down and read the interviews done with bandmembers/engineers/etc by uptown... you can probably find answers there.

with a shed-load of over-dubs! The little guy cant leave anything alone.
Hell, even the 3-disc One Nite Alone Live set was overdubbed.
Still, I cant blame him - he has a vision I guess, and has 2 follow his muse and all that...shrug

3 Chains Of Gold and Strays Of The World have both been
commented on by former bandmembers as 'one take' things
which Prince wanted to cut at once without any overdubs

I remember Sonny T or Michael B commenting on 3 Chains,
saying it was very stressful cuz he had them rehearse
all these different parts only once or twice and then
had them cut the song saying they would only get one
shot at getting it right.

I think Morris H also commented on Strays.

'When Doves Cry' was solo ... Dr Fink has commented on his surprise on hearing it first time. 'Sleep Around' was recorded with others live because I have heard / read engineer comment about it being one of the few occasions that Prince cut the vocals with the engineer around, and with the other musicians about - but I am sure the material will have been worked on afterwards.

Prince likes to record quickly, so if the band can pick it up quick, he'll put it down with them. Otherwise he'll do it all himself.

D+P was live with band (except Thunder), ATWIAD was with Revolution, etc

"The Undertaker" is completely "live, direct 2 dat"

only "Dolphin" was slightly tampered with after.

At least, that's what was reported. I don't know
about any overdubs on that one. Could be.

Gett Off doesnt really sound live.
maybe it is just REALLY polished

My bad, u're right about Gett Off. Although I think even though it's a studio cut, it was recorded with NPG playing the instruments.

Even though the drums sound like a loop, I remember reading that the drums were played live by Michael B through a processor to give it that electronic sounding edge

Joshy84au, The Beautiful Ones was recorded solely by Prince. Eye No, however, was recorded live. Good topic, though.
