How Many Prince Albums Do You ACTUALLY Own ???

Being the HUGE Prince fan that i am...going through my collection today i realised i don't even have ALL of his albums!!

Sure, i've owned all of them at one point or another, but after lending some to friends, having ex-lovers steal some, moving apartments, etc i've managed to lose quite a few sad

I know i've bought PURPLE RAIN at least 5 times over the years...bloody hell.

PRINCE (or WB) really need to reissue and remaster the old back catalogue and sell them as box sets so people like ME can go out and pick up the whole lot at ONCE!!!

Gotta go now...too busy looking for disc 2 of Emancipation damn it!

that depends. there were a lot of damaged ones (hole punched promos)... you can find the hole punched ones on ebay sometimes with no bids at the end of the auction... the most i'd pay for a mint condition one is $20... the japanese one is a little more rare. i'd pay $75-100 depending on if it was still sealed and what the condition of the tin was...

i think what i have is the edited version in the long box. i guess it depends on how much of a completist you are. if you're going to buy discs with long boxes, then they should be in mint condition, right? i'd say $10 over the price of the cd itself... (unless it's the original black album or something.)'

you'll find them going much higher on ebay, and overpriced stores like madhouse uk... but that's only because there are completists (like i used to be) that will pretty much pay any price to have everything...

yeah, with the demand for prince material out there dying out... the prices continue to go down for basically everything out there.

there will always be the dummy that'll spend $400+ on the gold colored "purple rain" cd from japan... and then the following week, it'll go for $100...

I own most of the official albums and beyond that fcuz,
a large collection of all known outtakes and a handful
of live boots. I don't have an amazing collection of live
stuff but recently I've been stocking up on it a bit. But
I don't buy boots anymore simply to have everything. It
has to be a good show or else I'll just pass.

The albums I don't have the originals of are:

Gold Nigga

Never got a chance to buy it since it was only available
thru 1800NewFunk and I didn't have a creditcard. A good
friend burnt me a copy tho.

Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic

I shared my year 1 membership with that same friend and
he payed for it so fcuz he got the cd. But again, he did
burn me a copy.

Kamasutra

I ordered Crystal Ball online and when it was delivered
it had 2 x "The Truth" album in it and no "Kamasutra",
so once again, yeah, you guessed it, my friend came to
the rescue and provided me with a copy of Kamasutra. To
this day I feel slightly sorry for the person who must
have got 2 "Kamasutras" in his ball and no "Truth". Owch
that musta hurt heheh.

Batman

I do have the limited edition black circular filmbox of
this album. The regular retail version is the only Prince
album I ever lent to anyone and fcuz my cheap ass ex did
not have the decency to return it to me after we split up
so I still have to get a replacement copy for that one.

The War

That whole "sharing pyramid" they set up didn't really
work that well since the bastards with the original who
were supposed to provide copies to others never gave me
a reply. Thus, I bought it from Sabotage.

good luck on that one... the only way you'll end up with an original copy of that one is by being an employee of paisley with access to old storage... and even then, they've probably all been sold at the garage sales paisley holds annually... you aren't missing anything... yeah, the sample... but, that album is truly difficult to listen to.

Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic

you should have no problem picking this up, as long as you do it rather quickly... i managed to pick it up on his official site via the retail section for $21 plus shipping or something... a steal... and i didn't even have to be a member...

Kamasutra

see above... this'll probably never be sold by him through the retail section of the npgmc because of it's ties to mayte... as with "gold nigga", you aren't missing much... it's at the bottom of the barrel for all of his instrumental albums...

Batman

i think i have about 8 versions of this... i suppose i could just give you one... lol. actually, i need to replace the original cd i bought in 1989... i think there's a skip on it here and there... not sure... it's been about a decade since i listened to it.

The War

this is still easy to come by, and to be honest, prince has no excuse for not selling this through the retail section of his site... it's a great song... and worth a dollar a minute... i paid $75 i think from a store in europe... still in it's shrinkwrap. i just listen to the version i downloaded (same with trc, rave un2...)

i mean, why open it, if you have it already available to listen to? hell, about 150 of my dvds are still sealed because i haven't got around to watching them yet...

Nah, I'm not really looking for the original copies of any
of these anymore. Might I stumble across them at some point
at a recordfare I may consider buying one but only if they
are not too expensive.

As you said, most of them are slight and rather poor albums
by any Princely standard so I don't really care if I only
have a copy of them instead of the original.

The times when I had to have every morsel to leave the park
are long gone. I only care about the music now, not that
much about a tazmanian 12" promo for an obscure album that
I didn't like in the first place.

Although, I have been guilty of such ventures in the past,
I will be tricked into it no more.

i think you speak for a lot of fans... in fact, i've seen sellers on ebay that i used to compete with... selling off there stuff...

it's sad...

i kind of always imagined sharing my collection with another prince fan... but now, i don't know...

and prince? well, i don't know what he's waiting for. by the time he starts releasing cds like he should've been when he was actually free from wbr... well, who's to say those big spenders will be around anymore?

you have people sharing npgmc memberships... those same people have spent thousands on bootlegs in the past...

prince needs to realize that things have changed... and well... to stop being so stingy and share! lol

i have probably 99% of everything up until "rave un2..."

that's when i stopped being silly...

well, when i stopped being silly and buying up everything i didn't have... and started buying dvds.

note to prince: since around the time you released "rave un2", i've spent nearly $5K on dvds.

your loss buddy... you could've followed through on your "free the music" anti-wbr slogan and put out a ton of material at any price and we would've paid...

what am i saying... when you do, we still will.

well... unless it's something like "dirty mind: the new master" featuring kirky j, tony m, etc...

then, you can sell them/give them away at the paisley garage sales...

we're waiting... well, some of us still are.

Let's put it this way:

If Prince decided to release an anthology series tomorrow
or even a remaster-project with double discs featuring the
original albums and outtakes of the sessions remastered,
with extensive linernotes and obscure songinfo and some
cool period artwork, I would be first in line, dishing out
a month's paycheck and buy them all at once without as
much as a second thought.

Same thing with his new albums. I dig the whole net thing
but I just don't understand how Ani Difranco can go and
release roughly an album or two worth of material every
year and just have it distributed to actual STORES where
people can buy it for a NORMAL price.

I just don't get why Prince wouldn't be able to do that??

And having albums like Xpectation and such made available
as downloads is kinda cool but still, it makes your Prince
collection look like shit with all your own cdr's and no
artwork or nothing.

It gives off a certain statement, as if the things that
were put up for download are somehow inferior to the rest
of the catalogue.

And I'm sure he must feel that way about downloads of his
stuff himself or otherwise he would not have held out on
us and only given us ONE true studio "vault" song [splash]
in the last 2 years of the club.

So if he's holding back that material then where the hell
is that anthology set? or crystal ball II or Roadhouse G?

Some floodgates, indeed.
